Georges St-Pierre and the 15 Biggest Nerds in MMA

Dan HiergesellJun 21, 2012

Though MMA fighters are fierce competitors, some of them are also undeniably nerds.

With their dorky accessories and intellectual hobbies, here are the 15 biggest nerds in MMA today.

Ryan Bader

1 of 15

What the hell is going on in this picture?

I've never seen a grown man look so silly in my life.

To think that Ryan Bader (yellow) can actually knock someone out after painting himself like a Care Bear is absolutely dumbfounding.

And yes, that's CB Dollaway in blue.

Fedor Emelianenko

2 of 15

If I didn't know who Fedor Emelianenko was and what he looked like, I'd think this guy double-fisting ice creams cones was mentally challenged.

He looks the part, but under that vanilla swirl and sugar cone lies one of the nastiest heavyweights in MMA history.

I wonder if they charged him.

Tom Lawlor

3 of 15

Tom Lawlor is truly unpredictable.

One night he'll be running to the cage with a birthday hat on his head and a party blower in his mouth, and the next night he'll be dressing like Austin Powers.

Whichever you prefer, Lawlor's antics easily land him on this list.

Phil Davis

4 of 15

Self-proclaimed nerd Phil Davis may be the most cultured fighter in MMA.

His knack for museum visits is uncanny.

Not to mention the thick black glasses that resemble those of LeBron James (sorry for the hipster reference).

Jason "Mayhem" Miller

5 of 15

What can be said about Jason "Mayhem" Miller that can't be found on the internet?

Honestly, not much at all.

From reality shows to video game expos, Miller has become one of the most public endorsers of MMA in the business.

That type of exposure has given people the chance to realize Miller is a nerd at heart.

His Twitter account is out of this world.

Forrest Griffin

6 of 15

It's easy to see that Forrest Griffin is a true bruiser in the UFC's light heavyweight division.

But if you aren't a true Griffin fan, you might not know he's a New York Times bestselling author.

Not to mention he looks like an ape and loves to play poker.

Griffin is definitely a man's man, but a nerdy one at that.

Josh Barnett

7 of 15

When people look at Josh Barnett's exterior shell, more specifically his intimidating beard, they don't see an anime fan.

I'm not sure if that takes away from his appeal, but it's difficult to dog a guy who likes to play video games and read comics.

Because when it comes down to it, I'm in the same boat.

Benson Henderson

8 of 15

Benson Henderson is a true mutant inside the Octagon.

His head kicks are laser beams.

His takedown defense is telekinetic.

His hands are adamantium-esque.

If you haven't guessed by now, Henderson likes the X-Men.

Michael Chandler

9 of 15

A lot of people don't even know who Michael Chandler is (Bellator's lightweight champion).

So it wouldn't surprise me if you didn't know he was a nerd to the tee...shirt that is.

Chandler loves making his own t-shirts.

That type of artistic talent is rare in a profession that usually sees its fighters painting pictures strictly inside the cage.

Joe Lauzon

10 of 15

Joe Lauzon's nerdy background as a former computer technician is fascinating.

He can choke out Melvin Guillard one day then clean his registry the next.

Like Rich Franklin being an ex-high school teacher, "J-Lau" has his own treasured background of fixing broken databases and programs.

I wonder if he has ever tapped out a motherboard.

Shane Carwin

11 of 15

Besides being able to punch through kevlar, Shane Carwin possesses impressive bachelors degrees in mechanical engineering and environmental technology.

So even though his right hand can make Frank Mir look silly, it can also develop a hydraulic system.

Just think what kind of fighter Carwin could be if he wasn't a full-time engineer.

Nam Phan

12 of 15

Nam Phan is the ultimate nice guy.

But like a true MMA professional, he knows exactly how to turn the switch and get buck nasty inside the cage.

Outside of that atmosphere, Phan is as straight edge as they get.

He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke and rarely swears.

Where's the fun in that?

Wanderlei Silva

13 of 15

I don't know much about Wanderlei Silva's nerdy side, but isn't this picture enough?

Whether or not this was for a photo shoot, Silva looks natural dressed up like he's hosting an aged-cheese diner party.

His tattoos may be showing, but if you crop them out, "The Axe Murderer" looks like an everyday smarty pants.

Georges St-Pierre

14 of 15

Georges St-Pierre has been referred to as the biggest nerd in MMA.

Rightfully so.

The self-proclaimed dinosaur expert loves everything from The Discovery Channel to Tyrannosaurus Rex feathers.

And even though fans would rather see him beating on BJ Penn inside the Octagon, St-Pierre's love for the Cretaceous period is downright infectious.

It's got me reassessing my own interests as we speak.

Joe Rogan

15 of 15

How could Joe Rogan not make this list?

He's just as big of a part of America's MMA scene as nearly every fighter on this list.

As the UFC's color commentator, Rogan has commanded an audience since day one.

But when it comes to his off-air persona, the ex-Fear Factor host enjoys hosting his own podcast, debating over the world's greatest conspiracy theories, discussing rare hallucinogens like dimethyltryptamine (DMT) and watching anything related to nature.

Rogan may not be a true nerd, but he most definitely possesses the qualities.
