US Open Golf Results 2012: Twitter Reacts as Webb Simpson Captures the Open

Sam R. QuinnJun 17, 2012

Webb Simpson, an unkown 26-year-old from Raleigh, North Carolina, won the 112th U.S. Open at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, California, but the story of the weekend was the course itself.

Simpson finished at 1-over par with a four-round score of 281. Graeme McDowell and Michael Thompson finished one stroke back of the newest major champion at 2-over par.

The mammoth, unforgiving 7,170-yard course took no prisoners during any of the four rounds. No golfer finished the tournament at par or better.

Many superstars fell victim to one of the toughest U.S. Open courses in recent memory.

Tiger Woods turned in one of his biggest choke jobs in some time, finishing at 7-over par for the tournament. Phil Mickelson was worse, finishing at 8-over for the day and 16-over for the tournament.

Bubba Watson and Rory McIlroy didn't even make it to the weekend. Both were cut after posting scores of 9-over par and 10-over par respectively.

The Twitter-verse has been bustling since Simpson secured a victory. Here are the best tweets pertaining to the latest U.S. Open.

ESPN Stats & Info lets us know that we shouldn't be surprised that a relatively unknown player finished atop the field at the U.S. Open:
