Roger Federer Upset by Tommy Haas at 2012 Gerry Weber Open

Thirty-four-year-old Tommy Haas stunned 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer Sunday at the 2012 Gerry Weber Open, 7-6 (5), 6-4.

It is Haas' second career win on the German grass, and Federer's second career loss in the Gerry Weber Open final. Federer won the annual ATP tournament five times from 2003 to 2008.

The grass-court tournament is a warmup to the summer's Wimbledon Championships, set at London's All England Club, where Federer will be among the three favorites to win it all on the men's side. 

Unfortunately for the 30-year-old Federer, his loss Sunday to the 87th-ranked Haas is a sign that he won't be contending with the likes of world No. 1 Novak Djokovic or world No. 2 and seven-time French Open champion Rafael Nadal at Wimbledon.

What to Expect From Fed-Ex at Wimbledon

Federer has won the prestigious grass-court major six times in his prolific career, yet his last championship there came in 2009, and he hasn't made it past the quarterfinals in his last two appearances at the All England Club. 

It would likely take a miracle for Federer, ranked No. 3 in the world, to overcome the 26-year-old Nadal in a potential semifinal matchup—if the Swiss tennis star can even make it that far. 

In 2011, Federer blew three straight sets in the quarterfinals to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after taking the first two. That collapse was hardly reminiscent of the Federer we have come to know over the past decade, signaling the end of an era in men's tennis.

Federer is now 0-for-9 in his last nine Grand Slam appearances. His last major tournament win came at the 2010 Australian Open, more than two years ago at age 28.

Federer will turn 31 after this summer's Wimbledon Championships and likely become an afterthought in men's tennis as Djokovic and Nadal continue their two-man rivalry.
