Beau Hossler: 17-Year Old's US Open Win Would Be Most Shocking in History

Austin GreenJun 7, 2018

Raise your hand if you had a braces-wearing, high-school-attending, 17-year-old winning the 2012 U.S. Open.

Now put your hands down, because unless your Beau Hossler's mom (who also happens to be causing quite the stir), you didn't see this one coming.

The kid, who isn't even old enough to run to the store and buy cigarettes for John Daly, is currently near the top of the U.S. Open leaderboard.

While players twice his age have been eaten alive by the unforgiving Olympic Club course, Hossler is displaying the savvy of a seasoned veteran. He's been remarkably consistent, hitting the ball well off the tee and avoiding disastrous situations that have doomed some of the world's best golfers.

He parred or birdied his first 11 holes of the second round, an incredible feat for anybody, let alone a kid who just finished his junior year at Santa Margarita High School in California.

He did hit a couple speed bumps on the notoriously tough course, registering a bogey on the second hole and a double-bogey on four.

He followed that up by shanking his tee shot on five, but he escaped with just a bogey after an absolutely gorgeous shot that started in the bunker, sailed through the trees and landed squarely in the fairway.

Right now, Hossler is tied for 11th place at three-over par. He's just five strokes behind leaders Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods, who are 42 and 36-years-old, respectively.

He still has plenty of work to do, but if Hossler can stay in contention throughout the tournament, his performance will go down as one of the most impressive in the 112-year history of the U.S. Open.
