Offbeat Sports Series: Canine Agility

Red ShannonFeb 10, 2009

Once again, we delve into the world of the lesser-known, unusual, and sometimes bizarre competitive sports. Mainstream media will never offer these hidden jewels to the public. Therefore it is this reporter's duty and pleasure to bring you today's feature: Canine Agility.

Canine Agility, as it is formally known, is an obstacle course for dogs. Expanding a bit, it might be better described as an obstacle course on steroids.

Whereas dog agility's distant equestrian cousin show jumping is a poetic dance with horse and rider negotiating the course at a deliberate canter, dog agility is a flat-out sprint more akin to a controlled chaos.

Dog agility is a timed event with deductions for incorrectly addressing barriers, failure to touch critical contact points on certain apparatuses, or undisciplined behavior on a midcourse feature called the podium.

A handler runs the course with the animal using only voice commands, hand signals, or body movements to direct the dog. No contact between handler and animal is permitted during the race.

The judge, who arranges the course to his liking, is also very active in the event. He moves through the course, keeping a sharp eye on all areas of potential point deduction.

The random arrangement of the course by the judge ensures that the dog must rely on its handler to successfully complete the race.

There are several classifications based on dog size. For example, a Maltese would not compete against a Border Collie. Borders, by the way, seem to dominate dog agility, perhaps due to their inherent herding instincts.

Agility is internationally recognized and sanctioned by the major dog organizations such as the American Kennel Club. Levels of competition range from local to national to world championship.

These four-legged athletes are eager to compete, love the race itself, and seem to understand the importance of winning.

If you ever get the chance, check out the incredible, offbeat, and entertaining sport of canine agility.
