Inter's Maicon to Spark PSG, Chelsea, Real Madrid, and Barcelona Bidding War

Christopher AlmerasJun 7, 2018

Inter Milan may raise funds for this summer’s transfers if they decide to sell star defender Douglas Maicon's contract. There is no shortage of interest in the Brazilian, with ESPN Soccernet reporting that Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea, and Real Madrid considering negotiations. Bidding between those four would surely drive the price up on the highly regarded right back.

Real Madrid would give Maicon the opportunity to reunite with his former coach Jose Mourinho. Under  Mourinho, Maicon won the Champions League in 2010. Madrid would also unite Maicon with fellow Brazilians Kaka and Marcelo.

Chelsea would seems to be a less likely destination due to Maicon’s age. With the Blues looking to get younger, the soon-to-be 31-year-old would be a temporary addition to the backline that already includes the aging John Terry and Ashley Cole.

Barcelona also seems unlikely. Daniel Alves is settled in at right back for Barcelona, and with the upcoming talent Barca has, Maicon would find himself splitting time in a season or two.

Paris Saint-Germain is the most intriguing destination for Maicon. PSG boasts a heavy South American contingent that includes Brazilians Nene and director Leonardo. With PSG trying to reel in fellow Brazilian defender Thiago Silva, Maicon could find himself partnered with his international teammate in the back four.

With PSG’s style of attacking play, Maicon’s talents would be showcased instead of reeled in. His ability to get forward and strike the ball will be utilized in Carlo Ancelotti’s attack. Maicon’s defensive abilities would also be an immediate upgrade over their current right back situation. With money currently no object to PSG, the salary could also be better than the others may offer.

All four teams are going to be competing in the Champions League and be favorites for capturing domestic silverware. With that in mind, all four are solid destinations for the defender. The question is whether Inter decides it is time to part ways with the Brazilian and how badly any of the four truly want him. If more than one have him graded as a must-have, Inter stands to profit considerably.
