Russia Euro 2012: UEFA Punishes Russian Squad for Fan Violence

Timothy RappJun 13, 2012

UEFA hasn't wasted any time sending a strong message to Russia after Tuesday's violence between Russian and Polish supporters in Warsaw. Fines and penalties have already been handed down, according to Sky Sports:

"

UEFA fine Russian Football Association £96,300 for fan violence at Euro 2012 #SSN

"

Russia also given suspended six-point deduction from next Euro qualifying campaign #SSN

While it is unfortunate and completely unacceptable that violence broke out on Tuesday, it is hardly surprising. Nearly 20,000 Russian fans were in Warsaw for the match, and the political tension between the two countries is hardly a secret, stemming from Soviet control of Poland long after World War II.

It didn't help that thousands of Russians planned to march to the stadium in honor of Russia Day, or that a huge flag was displayed that read "This is Russia."

While Russian leaders had promised the march would be peaceful, violence broke out, and 123 fans in all were arrested.

It's a black eye for both countries and truly a shame that violence broke out, putting a pall over what has thus far been a fantastic tournament and what was an exciting 1-1 tie between the two countries.

In addition, the sanctions—namely the six-point deduction—could be costly for the Russians in 2016 Euro qualifying, where the competition is fierce and every point is valuable.

One wonders how those foolish rioters will now feel if Russia misses the 2016 Euros. It is truly the case of the actions of a few costing millions the chance to support their country in the beloved Euros.

We can only hope this will be the only such incident at this tournament. The hope is that these tournaments will bring us together, not exacerbate our differences or issues.

Let's keep the battles on the pitch.
