Liverpool Transfer News: Gylfi Sigurdsson Set to Sign for the Reds

Matthew SnyderJun 7, 2018

The Mirror has revealed that 22-year-old Icelandic international Gylfi Sigurdsson is set to join Liverpool in the coming days for £6.8 million.

Sigurdsson is the latest arrival to Anfield in recent weeks, joining new manager Brendan Rodgers, who coached Sigurdsson during the youngster's loan spell at Swansea City during the latter half of this past season.

Rodgers was named to the post at the start of this month, and has hit the ground running looking for new recruits to help restore Liverpool to its considerable glory. (Since finishing in second place in the Premier League in 2008-09, Liverpool have failed to crack the top four in the last three seasons.)

The first player on his ambitious agenda is Sigurdsson, the March EPL Player of the Month, who became one of the hottest young prospects in world football after he contributed four goals and seven assists during his time in Wales.

There is a clause in Rodgers's Liverpool contract that prohibits him from signing any Swansea players for 12 months following his arrival at Anfield, but since Sigurdsson is not under contract at Swansea City—he is still on the books of German club Hoffenheim, who loaned him out—he is thus exempt from the ruling and free to join Liverpool.

Before he puts pen to paper, however, Sigurdsson has made it known that he wishes to meet with the new Swansea manager in order to explain his decision.

Michael Laudrup, the legendary Danish maestro, has emerged as the heavy favorite to land the position. Laudrup most recently managed Mallorca during the 2010-11 season.
