Umaga's Return...Who Really Cares?

Sam BrownFeb 9, 2009

Sorry, I couldn't find a good photo. I tried to upload a couple, but it wouldn't go so...yeah.

After a couple of months on the sidelines, Umaga has made his return to Smackdown.

Umaga Returns...

WRESTLING: OCT 02 AEW Dynamite/Rampage Pittsburgh
Monday Night RAW

Back in August of 2008, Umaga tore his PCL in a house show match against Jeff Hardy in Tennessee.

He has been sidelined since then.

Two weeks ago on Smackdown! Umaga finally made his return.

...and Who Really Cares

The saddest thing about Umaga's return is that very few wrestling fans even care that he's back.

WWE has failed to give him a return storyline to make fans care about him being back on television.

In his first match back on Smackdown, Umaga scored a win over Jimmy Wang Yang.

This week, he defeated Kung Fu Naki.

Nothing against Kung Fu Naki and Jimmy Wang Yang , but these are not guys that Umaga should have been fighting against.

Neither one of them has any momentum right now. They're both basically low level midcard wrestlers...maybe.

Alternative Ideas

While Umaga hasn't been relevant in a while, he still does have credibility as a potential player in the main event.

He's worked in the main event before (in an impressive and underrated rivalry with John Cena).

He can work in the main event again.

In order to do that, WWE is going to have to put him into a program with someone that the audience cares about.

Rather than simply coming back and working matches against midcard wrestlers, Umaga could have been thrown into something more important.

They should do a segment where Matt Hardy hires Umaga to do an attack on Jeff Hardy.

They can also do something where Umaga attacks the Undertaker. That's still a feud that wrestling fans are waiting to see.

Maybe put him in the United States Championship run. Or tag team...like below...

Samoan SWAT Team

In my last article I talked about Manu, and what could become of him.

There's an available tag team partner waiting for him on Raw in Manu.

The two wrestlers are related to one another, and WWE could recreate the Samoan SWAT Team with the two, even though Manu isn't that good. Obviously, Umaga would be the leader of the group.

Closing Thoughts

I'm quite disappointed with how lackluster Umaga's return has been. As someone that is a fan, I was looking forward to it. However, with him coming back and doing nothing immediately, it's taken the air out of my sail.

This has been an Assassin article.
