Desmonte Leonard is the suspect in custody.

-------- end of update ----------

Police are on the hunt for 22-year-old Desmonte Leonard, as he is the prime suspect in the shooting deaths of three men and the wounding of three others, stemming from an incident at an apartment complex near the Auburn University campus, according to Bassing.

Bassing is reporting that police searched a house in Montgomery and fired tear gas cartridges into the residence. Although there are conflicting reports as to precisely what happened, FBI spokesman Douglas Astralaga said that it was not the correct home.

Law enforcement searched the house for several hours on Monday night, stretching into Tuesday morning, but they left at 2:25 a.m. ET, according to the Associated Press. The AP is also reporting that thermal imaging equipment suggested there was someone in the house's attic, but nothing was uncovered during the search.

Jay G. Tate of the Montgomery Advertiser has spoken with the Auburn Police Department chief Tommy Dawson, and Dawson doesn't believe that the police raided the wrong house on Monday night.

Whether that means that Dawson thinks Leonard was in the house at one time or another isn't yet known. The only sure thing is that police were unable to recover Leonard from the home, so the search will continue for the main suspect in the case.

According to the Associated Press, there were two men arrested in association with the case. Due to hindering the investigation, 18-year-old Jeremy Thomas and 41-year-old Gabriel Thomas were taken into custody. Thomas reportedly fled the scene of the shooting, while Gabriel Thomas reportedly provided the police with false information.

The three killed in the shooting have been identified as former Auburn football players Edward Christian and Ladarious Phillips as well as Demario Pitts. Current player Eric Mack was among those wounded along with Xavier Moss and John Robertson. The Associated Press is reporting that Mack and Moss were released from the hospital, but Robertson is in critical condition after being shot in the head.

With regard to the failed house raid, it appears as though the Auburn Police Department may not be done with the home as of yet. According to Tate, Dawson said that there is still a chance that Leonard will be recovered from the house.

There are clearly a lot of moving parts in this case, but it starts with the arrest and questioning of Leonard. He has yet to be found, and there may have already been one blunder despite Dawson's contention that the police raided the right house.

Whatever the case, this certainly isn't the last we'll hear of the Auburn shooting saga.
