MLB: One Way for Every Team to Turn It Around by the All-Star Break

Zak SchmollJun 7, 2018

Some Major League Baseball teams have been hot so far this season, but others definitely have not and are in need of a turnaround. We are starting to get to the point of the season with that turnaround needs to come sooner rather than later or it will be too late.

However, there still is hope. Here is one way for every MLB team to turn it around by the All-Star break. If the team is already playing well and not in need of a turnaround, then their side will talk about one key to their continued success.

Arizona Diamondbacks: Find Some Power

1 of 30

The Arizona Diamondbacks shouldn't have any problems hitting home runs with guys like Justin Upton and Jason Kubel in the middle of their lineup. However, that hasn't been the case so far this year as the Diamondbacks simply have had trouble scoring runs.

Somehow, the Diamondbacks need to find some power. Most likely, they would need to do this by means of a trade, but if they want to start climbing back up, this is the area they need to improve.

Atlanta Braves: Reinforce the Starting Rotation

2 of 30

It seems odd to say this about the Atlanta Braves, but they need some pitching support. They have gotten great performances throughout the lineup, but their starting rotation could use some more reinforcement.

They may have helped remedy this problem by the recent call up of Julio Teheran, but they may need to go out and look for a low cost option to help round out the rotation. After all, you need to use every guy in the rotation once every five days, so they need to be solid throughout.

Baltimore Orioles: Keep the Bullpen Hot

3 of 30

The Baltimore Orioles have been impressive across the board all season, so it was hard for me to choose one most important piece of their continued success. However, they have a fabulous service out of Pedro Strop, Darren O'Day and closer Jim Johnson.

Everything else can go right for the Orioles, but if they are blowing games right at the end with no chance to come back, that would be a problem. Therefore, that is why keeping the bullpen hot is so important for them.

Boston Red Sox: Solidify the Rotation

4 of 30

Scoring runs is not a problem for the Boston Red Sox. In fact, that will become even less of a problem when Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury returned to the outfield. However, if you score 10 runs a game, it really doesn't matter if your pitching staff surrenders 11.

The Boston Red Sox are under a lot of pressure from their fans, and they should make a big trade as soon as possible for a front-line starter who will be able to pair with Josh Beckett and Jon Lester to help Boston climb back in to contention.

Chicago Cubs: Get the Bullpen Together

5 of 30

The Chicago Cubs have multiple problems, but it is very important for them to get their bullpen in order first. They have many pitchers that they use regularly that have ERAs of 5.00 or above. Obviously, there is a problem here.

Relief pitching is probably going to be in high demand as the season wears on, so the Chicago Cubs would be smart to move as quickly as possible before the price rises due to competition.

Chicago White Sox: Strengthen the Starting Rotation

6 of 30

On offense, the Chicago White Sox have simply been mashing the ball. Paul Konerko is strong as always, and Adam Dunn has bounced back to essentially his old self. Also, their bullpen has provided some pleasant surprises.

Their starting rotation hasn't even been that bad, but if they really want to jump ahead in the American League Central, a bona fide ace would definitely help. Maybe the White Sox could go for broke this season and do what they have to do to do very well this year.

Cincinnati Reds: Find a Table Setter

7 of 30

The Cincinnati Reds play in the Great American Ballpark, so offense is going to be their strong point. Joey Votto and Jay Bruce can drive in a lot of runs from the middle of the lineup, but the Reds need to try to get more runners on base for these guys.

Notice that this is a relatively small detail because Cincinnati is playing so well. However, this is one area where they could get even better. Putting a runner on base more often from the top of the lineup will only make them better.

Cleveland Indians: Strengthen the Middle of Their Rotation

8 of 30

The Cleveland Indians are playing very well this year, and even though they are not hitting very many home runs, they are driving in runs. In order to become even better, they need to cut down on the runs they are allowing.

Most of their bullpen has been exceptionally strong, but they could use some help with the starting rotation. Derek Lowe, Justin Masterson and Ubaldo Jimenez have done all right, but adding another arm to the end of the rotation would help Cleveland as they strive to win control of the division.

Colorado Rockies: Trade for Any Type of Starting Pitching

9 of 30

I know that I just said that the Cincinnati Reds need to play to their ballpark and focus on offense. The Colorado Rockies should do something similar, but their best starting pitcher in terms of ERA is Drew Pomeranz who is currently sitting at 4.70.

It is hard to win baseball games when they surrender that many runs no matter where you play. The offense has been functioning well, but it has obviously not been paying dividends in terms of wins mainly because of their lack of pitching.

Detroit Tigers: Start Playing How They Should Be Playing

10 of 30

The Detroit Tigers have been among the biggest disappointments in Major League Baseball this year. In particular, their pitching staff has been especially shaky from the beginning. Justin Verlander has been strong as well as Drew Smyly, but the remaining three pitchers have not pulled their weight.

The Tigers have all the potential to do great, so the solution to turning it around might be as simple as playing better. However, a trade for a pitcher may also be in order. The Tigers have gone big this season, so there is definitely pressure to pull it together.

Houston Astros: Find Another Bat

11 of 30

The Houston Astros are overachieving so far this year, but their biggest need so far is to find another bat. Carlos Lee can be a run producer, but the Astros need more in their lineup if they want to support some of the solid pitching performances from the likes of Wandy Rodriguez and Bud Norris.

All of that being said, the Astros might eventually end up having to sell somewhat if they fall too far behind, but, if they want to try their best to go for it this season, they need to find a powerful bat in the middle of the lineup who can drive in runs.

Kansas City Royals: Work on Turning around Next Year

12 of 30

The Kansas City Royals will be good someday. They keep developing great minor league prospects such as Eric Hosmer, Billy Butler or Alex Gordon, and they just drafted two high-potential pitchers in Kyle Zimmer and Sam Selman. Eventually, everything is going to come together for them.

With that strength in mind, they really should worry about selling off what they have, grabbing more prospects and focusing on this core group that is being built by their front office. If you keep developing great players, you will develop a great team.

Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim: Play up to Their Potential

13 of 30

I know that this is a bit ambiguous, but the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim look amazing on paper. Unfortunately for them, baseball isn't played on paper. They may be starting to play to their potential especially with the emergence of Albert Pujols, but they definitely need to do better if they want to even threaten the Texas Rangers.

It isn't that they necessarily that they need to make some type of change, but something has not been going right so far, and that needs to change. Perhaps a trade might be in order to try to spark the lineup, but even that might not be necessary if everyone is able to actually do what they are capable of doing.

Los Angeles Dodgers: Umm... What Is There to Say?

14 of 30

What really is there to say about the best team in baseball right now? The Los Angeles Dodgers are on top of their game, and they seem to be firing on all cylinders even with the absence of their superstar, Matt Kemp.

While I would not advocate any type of change for them right now, it order to keep this amazing streak going, Andre Ethier needs to continue playing as well as he has been. He has been a run producing machine, and especially until Kemp returns, they need him to continue hammering the ball.

Miami Marlins: Figure out How to Finish Games

15 of 30

The Miami Marlins are right in the thick of the National League East, so it is rather evident that they are doing something right.

However, they need to figure out what to do at the end of games. Heath Bell hasn't been working out very well so far, and the rest of their bullpen has not been that stellar either. If they want to be able to hold on in the National League East, they need to finish their games effectively.

Milwaukee Brewers: Score Some Runs Somehow

16 of 30

Ryan Braun is having a very solid campaign, but beyond him and Aramis Ramirez to some extent, the Milwaukee Brewers are having a very difficult time scoring runs.

It is possible that the Brewers will sell since they are quite a ways out of contention, but if there are going to try to get it turned around, finding another that needs to be the top priority. They are another team is not living up to their potential, so they might be able to score runs without going through all that trouble, but a trade would help expedite that process.

Minnesota Twins: Start Selling

17 of 30

The Minnesota Twins should probably not worry about turning it around this season. Rather, they should worry about what they're going to do to make the next few seasons better than the past few seasons.

Part of this would probably involve trading Justin Morneau if they can to not only free up payroll but also get maybe a little return. Almost any player should probably be on the table so that the Twins can try to start fresh.

New York Mets: Build up the Bullpen

18 of 30

The New York Mets have been getting great service from their starting rotation. In particular, R.A. Dickey and Johan Santana have both been going deep into games and delivering leads to the bullpen.

That is one of the problems. The New York Mets do not have the best bullpen right now, and that is one area that should definitely improve. Frank Francisco has been converting saves, but his ERA is elevated just like the rest of their bullpen. Perhaps the Mets could swing a trade to help them stay competitive in the National League East.

New York Yankees: Need to Stay Hot

19 of 30

The New York Yankees have made a nice comeback in the American League East, and they have been relying on some major performances from some surprising sources such as Raul Ibanez and the ageless Andy Pettitte.

However, that is the New York Yankees need to continue. The Yankees did it last year with Bartolo Colon and Freddy Garcia, so they're obviously comfortable trusting these hot players. If these performances are able to continue, the Yankees will be able to do well without very many changes it all.

Oakland Athletics: Put Some Runs across the Plate

20 of 30

Josh Reddick had come out of his shell as a member of the Oakland Athletics. He is leading the team in home runs and RBI which is awesome. The problem with that is that nobody else is doing very much on the offensive end.

Ideally, it would make sense for Oakland to try to zero in on a hitter who is able to get on base, preferably out of the second slot. That way, he will be able to help advance his teammates around the bases ahead of Reddick who will then be able to drive them in. They do not have a lot of offense, but this will help enhance the offense they do have.

Philadelphia Phillies: Find Some Offense

21 of 30

The Philadelphia Phillies have definitely had a frustrating 2012, and most of their struggles have been due to a weak offense. When they do score, they tend to score in bunches, but that really doesn't happen often enough to help them very much.

Therefore, to turn it around, they really need to find a bat. Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are working their way back, but a trade might be a quicker and more efficient way to try to help this flailing franchise.

Pittsburgh Pirates: Find Another Arm

22 of 30

The Pittsburgh Pirates are doing great so far this year, and a lot of that is due to the great pitching. James McDonald has highlighted that staff, but he is definitely not the only one who has performed above expectations.

However, even with the great success so far, if they want to really pull away, another arm would help out quite a bit. Despite all of the amazing surprises, it might be helpful to have another veteran arm in that rotation to help out as the pressure increases.

San Diego Padres: Sell Somewhat

23 of 30

The San Diego Padres have a decent young core with guys like Yonder Alonso emerging. They might be able to contend in the relatively near future if they play their cards right. This season has obviously not gone very well, but the future looks brighter.

Therefore, the Padres need to sell selectively. They should trim away the parts right now who will not make an impact next year and try to generate some return from them. They have some positive pieces in the aforementioned Alonso, Carlos Quentin and a few others, so they don't want to sell those, but everyone else should be sold if they have any value to try to focus on the future.

San Francisco Giants: Tim Lincecum Needs to Heat up

24 of 30

Let me just emphasize the point that the San Francisco Giants are doing fine right now. However, if Tim Lincecum is able to return to his fabulous form, the Giants will become even better.

He is an excellent pitcher, and even though this year has been rough so far, he is going to be better. It will be very hard to catch up to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but when Lincecum does return to form (notice that there is no question there), the Giants will be able to make a much better run.

Seattle Mariners: Hit for Some Average

25 of 30

The Seattle Mariners are driving in some runs, but their team batting average leaves something to be desired. They did not have a single position player who is hitting over .300 this season, and it is hard to drive in many runs without runners on-base.

The Seattle Mariners pitching staff seems to be coming around a little bit, and even though they still do need to improve, trading for a high-average hitter and consequently creating more scoring opportunities is a huge deal.

St. Louis Cardinals: Get a Pitcher

26 of 30

The St. Louis Cardinals are having a good season, and Carlos Beltran has been driving that lineup. The Cardinals are another team that have a great rotation on paper, but they have been battling with injuries to both Chris Carpenter and now Jamie Garcia.

That is why the Cardinals need to look for a starting pitcher. Even though Garcia should not be out for the whole season, the Cardinals should still make a move for a pitcher just to make sure that their starting rotation doesn't fall apart over the next few weeks or months.

Tampa Bay Rays: Pitch Their Way into the Playoffs

27 of 30

The Tampa Bay Rays are definitely one of the top teams in baseball right now, and they need to stay that sharp in the ultra-competitive American League East. Their starting pitching is incredibly important to any success that they will have, so they need to stay hot.

James Shields, David Price, Jeremy Hellickson and Matt Moore all need to continue their strong performances. The Rays can score enough runs to support them, so that is not necessarily a problem, but if they want to stay on top in the East, pitching will help set them apart.

Texas Rangers: Keep the Pressure on

28 of 30

The Texas Rangers are one of the top teams in baseball. Their lineup has major run potential, and the entire pitching staff seems to have handled the departure former ace CJ Wilson very well. Given the fact that the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been under-performing this year, the Texas Rangers should not have a ton of competition in the American League West.

That is where the danger comes. They need to make sure that they do not become complacent, and they need to keep the pressure on all of their opponents. They need to make sure that they are in top form when the playoffs come, and they can do that by making sure they are doing everything in their power to stay sharp.

Toronto Blue Jays: Don't Start Surrendering Too Many Runs

29 of 30

The Toronto Blue Jays are playing good baseball right now, but the reality is that they are in a very difficult division.

However, if they want to turn this season around and end up near the top, they cannot start allowing too many runs. Their team ERA is creeping up slowly, and it might be smart to go out and grab one more strong pitcher who will help them solidify this area. In the American League East, there is far too much firepower to mess around with.

Washington Nationals: Starting Pitching Domination

30 of 30

The Washington Nationals are playing great baseball this season, and quite a bit of that success is coming directly from their starting rotation. Stephen Strasburg has led the way with his blistering fastball, but Gio Gonzalez, Edwin Jackson and Jordan Zimmerman have a very strong as well.

The National League East has been a very competitive division so far, and if the Washington Nationals can keep pitching as well as they have been, they will be tough to beat.
