Mayweather vs Pacquiao Superfight Is Only Way to Save Boxing

Alex KayJun 6, 2018

Manny Pacquiao was “defeated” on Saturday night by Timothy Bradley in one of the most controversial results in boxing history. By all accounts, Pac-Man was the rightful winner of the fight and the judges may have permanently damaged the credibility of the sport by awarding the decision to Desert Storm.

After this fiasco, there is only one way for boxing to regain any sort of luster in the public eye, and that is to finally hold a bout between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

This highly anticipated fight would have to go off without a hitch as well, and hopefully end in some sort of knockout that would not involve the judges.

While both sides could not seem to agree to a 50/50 split of the profits prior to Money’s incarceration and Pac-Man’s loss (via Osman Rodriguez of BoxingScene.com), things might be different now that there is more pressure on Pacquiao to regain his status as an elite fighter after being robbed of a victory.

History will not remember the circumstances surrounding that decision kindly, while the blemish on Pac’s record will always remain.

Mayweather will hopefully be looking for a marquee battle to prove that he hasn’t lost a step since going to jail, and will likely be able to leverage better than a 50/50 split now that his opponent has another loss while he remains undefeated.

It might take some more time at the negotiating table, but these two fighters must find a way to restore the public faith in their sport before they completely lose many of their borderline fans and even some vehement supporters.

Hopefully, Pacquiao and Mayweather soon realize that finding a way to fight will change their legacies, grow their bank accounts and possibly restore faith in their sport.
