Manny Pacquiao: Why Pac-Man Should Focus on Fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Manny Pacquiao was absolutely robbed of a victory on Saturday night, but that does not mean promoter Bob Arum and the rest of his camp should stop pursuing a megafight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Anyone who watched Pac-Man fight Timothy Bradley knows that the Filipino should still have his belt and rightfully won the bout. There is talk of a November rematch to settle the score, but Manny’s top option has to be taking on Money Mayweather.

According to Lance Pugmire of the Los Angeles Times, Arum isn’t sure if he wants to exercise the clause in the contract that allows for a second fight in the case that Pacquiao was defeated. Ticket brokers are apparently telling him that “no one will go” and he would prefer to see poll results from fans before making a decision.

Hopefully, he won’t have to depend on the polling and can instead schedule the match that everyone wants to see in Pacquiao vs. Mayweather.

Mayweather is currently serving out an 87-day stint in Clark County jail in Nevada for domestic abuse, but could be released in as little as two months with good behavior.

Now that Pacquiao has a recent loss under his belt, albeit an unfair one, it might allow for his negotiators to concede the 50/50 profit split that they were adamant about during earlier talks.

Pac-Man has to stop worrying about his bank account and instead look to remind the world that he is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters alive. Giving up a few dollars for a chance to display that against Money Mayweather would be wise in the long run.

Boxing was just disgraced by the result of the Bradley vs. Pacquiao bout, but a chance for redemption isn’t far off if Mayweather and Pac-Man can get to the bargaining table and hammer out the details for a fight later this year.
