After Pats Cut Chad Ochocinco, Which NFL Teams Should Give Veteran WR a Call?

Chris TrapassoJun 7, 2018

Chad Ochocinco couldn't cut it in New England with the Patriots, but a handful of teams should consider the former Pro Bowl wideout.

At 34, Ochocinco isn't physically past his prime, but many believe he couldn't grasp Bill Belichick's intricate playbook.

Heading into the 2012 season, these clubs, who need more help in their receiving corps, should give Ochocinco a call or get ahold of him on Twitter.

Houston Texans

The Houston Texans have one of the most sound rosters in the AFC. Defensive end J.J. Watt went as far to say that they "don't really have any weaknesses."

While his brazen statement isn't far off, the club could use more receiver reinforcements, that's for sure. Andre Johnson is a top-five wideout when he's healthy, but he battled hamstring injuries last season and mustered only seven games in 2011.

Kevin Walter remains on the roster, but the diminutive slot receiver has seen his receptions drop in each of the last five seasons. In 2007, he caught 65 passes. Last year, he disappointingly had only 39 grabs.

The team drafted DeVier Posey and Keshawn Martin in this year's draft, but we know how rookie wideouts tend to take a long time to acclimate themselves to the professional game.

The Texans run a traditional offense that's far less complex than the spread system run in New England. If anything, Ochocinco could become a deep threat to open the field for Johnson and the team's other receivers underneath.

After all, Gary Kubiak did say there's a "strong possibility" his team will add a veteran wide receiver.

Miami Dolphins

Quick, name a wideout on the Dolphins. Not as easy as it was before when Brandon Marshall was on the team. Despite being relatively unnoticed, guys like Brian Hartline and Davone Bess have actually been solid contributors early in their careers.

However, after them, Miami's receiving unit is vastly inexperienced.

Four rookie wideouts are currently on the roster, and the others with NFL experience, besides Bess and Hartline, are Clyde Gates, Chris Hogan, Marlon Moore, Legedu Naanee, Julius Pruitt and Roberto Wallace.

Not exactly a group of household names.

Ochocinco would undoubtedly add some flair and, most importantly, veteran leadership to the Dolphins. Remember, they are the featured team on HBO's Hard Knocks this summer. Ochocinco would definitely create more buzz in South Beach.

And, he's a Miami native.

Need I say more?

Cleveland Browns

The Browns' offense has been, well, offensive the few seasons. Colt McCoy hasn't been the answer, but the team drafted Trent Richardson and Brandon Weeden in the first round of this year's draft, so they're looking to add more potency to their attack.

If and when Weeden gets the nod as the club's starter, no NFL quarterback would envy his situation.

His receiving weapons are less than stellar with Greg Little the most productive receiver that'll be on the roster this season. He had a respectable 2011 with 61 catches for 709 yards but caught only two touchdowns.

The team invested a fourth-round pick in Travis Benjamin, and Mohamed Massaquoi returns for his fourth season.

Still, an injection of speed, talent and bravado would be welcomed in Cleveland, no?

Buffalo Bills

The Bills re-signed Stevie Johnson this offseason, the first wideout in team history to record back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons (Andre Reed never did that?). David Nelson has carved out a nice niche as the team's big slot target and is coming off a solid 61-catch, 658-yard and five touchdown season in 2011.

After that, the team's filled with unproven and unestablished wideouts.

Brad Smith's 32 receptions in 2007 with the New York Jets is the best career high of any player on Buffalo's roster.

T.J. Graham was selected in the third round of this year's draft, but he's a raw speedster who may take time to transition to the NFL. Naaman Roosevelt and Donald Jones have spent time on the team's practice squad. 2010 draftee Marcus Easley, though apparently quite the physical specimen, has yet to play a down in the regular season.

Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick does have a previous connection with Ochocinco, after the two spent time together in Cincinnati during the 2008 season.

The Bills don't need more attention, but Johnson and Ochocinco would be quite the captivating receiving duo.
