2012 MLB Draft Grades: Final Team-by-Team Report Cards and Results

Mike RosenbaumJun 3, 2018

Now that the 2012 MLB first-year player draft has officially concluded and teams begin the arduous task of trying to sign as many of their most promising draft picks as their respective spending pool allows, it's time to assess how each team did with their selections.

While some teams who only had one pick in the first round clearly employed an all-in approach with the hope of signing the best available talent on the board, other teams with multiple picks were forced to make more realistic and affordable selections.

Here is a detailed look at each organization's entire draft—that's right, every pick from rounds 1-40—as well as my overall assessment of the caliber of their picks.

Baltimore Orioles

1 of 30

Grade: A-

Overview: After selecting LSU's Kevin Gausman with the fourth-overall pick, the Orioles emphasized college talent that not only could make an impact at the big-league level within a few years, but still had time to reach their projected ceiling.

Boston Red Sox

2 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: After drafting multiple collegiate players who are likely to reach the major leagues, the Red Sox branched out and mixed in a few high-upside prep players. Still, I would have liked to have seen them make bolder (and not necessarily safe) picks to begin the their draft. While Deven Marrero and Brian Johnson are likely to be big-leaguers, there's little room for projection.

3 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: After selecting two high-upside prep players in Ty Hensley and Austin Aune, the Yankees focused on a mix of starting and relief pitching from the collegiate level, although they did work in some potentially signable prep players here and there.

Tampa Bay Rays

4 of 30

Grade: B-

Overview: After making a haul with the most picks of any team in the 2011 draft, the Rays' draft was a bit disappointing this year. I really like that they landed Richie Shaffer, who might end up at a corner outfield position, but after that, they took too many risks on players who have a high ceiling with baseball skills that lag behind.

Toronto Blue Jays

5 of 30

Grade: A

Overview: In my opinion, the Blue Jays had the best first round of all teams, selecting five players who may all be signable and possess tremendous upside. But their solid draft didn't stop there, as they added exceptional talent in Chase deJong and Anthony Alford in the following rounds, as well as some more toolsy players and projectable arms as the draft progressed.

Chicago White Sox

6 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: While I applaud the White Sox's boldness in targeting Hawkins and Barnum with their first two picks, I think they should have taken a safer route with one of the two. However, they did add some some solid collegiate arms (like Chris Beck, who could be one of the bigger steals) and up-the-middle bats later on.

Cleveland Indians

7 of 30

Grade: C+

Overview: First of all, while Tyler Naquin could be a solid big-leaguer, I think he was an overdraft. I expected them to covet collegiate arms, which they lack in their system, but instead, they continued to draft high-upside prep players. However, I do like where they got Dylan Baker.

Kansas City Royals

9 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: The Royals needed to add collegiate arms, and that's exactly what they did with their first two picks. The fact that they drafted Kyle Zimmer automatically makes them a winner.

Minnesota Twins

10 of 30

Grade: B+

Overview: I'm a huge fan of the Twins' first six picks, and the fact that they were able to land the player with the best athleticism and highest ceiling (Buxton) as well as multiple arms with big-league potential.

Los Angeles Angels

11 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: Tough draft for the Angels, who didn't make their first pick until the third round. However, I believe their first three picks were very solid, especially Yarbrough, who could pan out to be a solid big-league second baseman. Reid Scoggins in the 15th could ultimately be a steal, as well.

Overview: Were the A's three first-round picks risky and a deviation from their typically draft strategy? Yes. However, you can't knock the immensely talented players who they should be able to sign.

Seattle Mariners

13 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: The Mariners could have drafted players with high ceilings, especially in the early rounds; however, they took the safe route and secured some of the top college position players in the draft, with a few prep players mixed in early on. I think that they made the wise decision.

Texas Rangers

14 of 30

Grade: B+

Overview: Given the state of the Rangers' system, they were able to make risky selections on some of the more athletic, high-ceiling players on the board. It looks like they'll be able to sign at least Brinson and Gallo, which in my opinion makes their draft a huge success. And if they ultimately sign Jameis Winston, they could warrant an A- rather than a B+.

Atlanta Braves

15 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: The Braves had the luxury of having a multitude of first-round picks, and I really like their decision to draft Sims with their first pick. Beyond that, they were able to target some collegiate players, both pitchers and position players (Alex Wood, Josh Elander, David Starn), who have a legitimate shot of reaching the major leagues.

Miami Marlins

16 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: After making a safe pick in Heaney, who will likely be a mid-rotation starter, they were able to land both Avery Romero and Kolby Copeland, two prep talents who have highly projectable hit and power tools. Beyond that, they selected a host of wild card-type talent.

New York Mets

17 of 30

Grade: A-

Overview: The Mets' first five picks are some of the strongest among all teams, as they landed a healthy mix of high-upside positional talent and college players who should reach the major leagues. Basically, for every prep player they selected, they balanced it out with a safer college player.

Overview: Considering that they didn't make their first pick until the mid-supplemental first round, they did walk away with two prep arms who slid down the board. By the fourth round, though, they started heavily drafting collegiate talent.

Houston Astros

Grade: A

Overview: Not only did they draft the top infield prospect in the entire draft class, but it looks like they'll also be able to sign Lance McCullers, who was some of the best stuff among all draft-eligible pitchers. And if the fact that they might be able to sign Rio Ruiz as well could garner a fringy A+ grade.

Milwaukee Brewers

23 of 30

Grade: B

Overview: It was no secret headed into draft day that the Brewers coveted power bats, and that's exactly what they drafted with their first three picks. I would have given them a B- had one of their picks not been Mitch Haniger.

Overview: Assuming that they sign Appel, they will now have a projected 2015 rotation of Gerrit Cole, Jameson Taillon, and Appel, which is pretty dirty. They also added nice pieces in Barrett Barnes and Wyatt Mathisen.
