French Open 2012: Day 11 Scores, Results and Recap

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

Goodbye, Andy Murray.

On a day when the first three favorites in play advanced to the semifinals—including a clinical victory for Rafael Nadal, who looks unbeatable right now—the man of a thousand grunts and grimaces failed to advance against David Ferrer.

Frankly, I'll miss having the quirky Brit around, especially since I was positive the top four players in the men's game were bound to advance at Roland Garros.

Oh well—it wasn't to be. Let's take a look back at today's action.

Andy Murray Bows Out

David Ferrer (6)66(3)66
Andy Murray (4)47(7)32

Andy Murray just never looked terribly comfortable in this one, while Ferrer continued his impressive French Open run with a very impressive victory.

It didn't help that Murray committed 59 unforced errors and missed several easy opportunities at the net, or that he seemed to lose his composure after a third-set rain delay and never really recovered.

The loss snaps Murray's run of five consecutive semifinals at Grand Slam tournaments. And the win means a likely loss for Ferrer against the scalding-hot Rafael Nadal.

Will Nadal Ever Lose at Roland Garros Again?

Probably. But the way he is playing right now, it doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon. Keep in mind that Nadal hasn't yet dropped a set and has only lost 30 games in five matches.

Almagro battled, but after the first set provided little difficulty for Nadal, who now gets to tangle with Ferrer in the semifinal. Frankly, Ferrer's first goal should simply be to take a set from Nadal, let alone worrying about winning the entire match.

I continue to hold out hope that Nadal will get to take on Novak Djokovic. I'd settle for a Nadal versus Roger Federer feud as well.

But mark my words—Nadal will be in the final. And he may not drop a set on his way there.

As dominant as Nadal has been, Sharapova has almost been as good. She's only dropped one set the entire tournament and just 24 games. She only needs to make the final to overtake the No. 1 ranking in the world from Victoria Azarenka.

But standing in her way is Kvitova, last year's breakout performer. Kvitova has been erratic at times but is as talented as any woman in the world when she is on the top of her game.

Neither player has a history of dominating the other, with Sharapova holding a 3-2 lead in the series. With how steady she's been in this tournament, the edge has to go to Sharapova, but Kvitova will give her headaches one way or the other and can win if she has her A-game ready.

I can't wait for this one.
