Liverpool Transfer News: Gylfi Sigurdsson Would Revamp Reds' Midfield

Ben ChodosJun 7, 2018

Brendan Rodgers is continuing to make bold moves after his recent appointment as Liverpool manager, and he will be looking to steal midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson away from his old club.

The Icelandic center-mid played for Swansea City last season while on loan from Bundesliga-based Hoffenheim. Swansea reportedly agreed to a £7 million deal that would permanently bring the 22-year-old to Britain, but Rodgers’ move has now put that deal in doubt, according to David Maddock of Mirror football.

In his article, Maddock quotes Sigurdsson as saying, “It’s just unclear at this moment where I will play. After Brendan Rodgers left Swansea for Liverpool, that has changed the situation.”

If Rodgers can complete this coup, it would be a huge boost to the Liverpool midfield.

The Reds received decent play from deep-lying midfielders Lucas Leiva and Charlie Adam, but the players who were tasked with attacking from the center of the pitch struggled last season.

No Reds’ player was more vilified than Stewart Downing, who managed to start 28 English Premier League matches without recording a single assist. Jordan Henderson did not do much better, creating just one goal for a teammate in 31 EPL starts. Between the two players, they only scored four goals.

Clearly, Rodgers must find upgrades for this position. He has already showed interest in Crewe youngster Nick Powell. But Sigurdsson is an ideal candidate because of his familiarity with Rodgers.

Sigurdsson was very successful during his stint in Wales, notching seven goals and three assists in 17 Premiership matches.

He is a lanky player with crafty footwork and wicked shot. His quote above shows that he respects his manager at Swansea and has genuine interest in playing for him in the future.

He is young and talented and already a much better player than Liverpool’s other players at the position. He would likely be pegged for a starting role immediately upon arrival at Anfield, barring any other big transfers.

The team desperately needs a creative player to play behind the strikers, and this is Sigurdsson’s preferred position. Rodgers knows how the get the most out of his talents, so there will not be much of a learning curve for the youngster.

The bar has been set very low for attacking midfielders at Anfield, and just two assists on the season would already make Sigurdsson an improvement from last year.

Rodgers would be making a great move to start his career at Liverpool by bringing his former player on board.
