Belmont Stakes 2012 Odds: Smart Money Plays You Must Take

While every causal horse racing fan would love to see the Triple Crown achieved for the first time since 1978, the odds suggest I’ll Have Another should be ignored.

When you are 6-4 odds to win in a 12-horse race, the value has been diminished beyond repair. It’s not the smart bet to take.  With the news that he’ll be racing from the No. 11 post (only one horse has placed from this position since 2002), you have further proof this is an awful bet to make.

The benefit of having one horse chasing history is that plenty of other colts aren’t getting the credit they deserve.

The first horse that jumps out is Union Rags, a colt who was one of the favorites at the Kentucky Derby but got caught up in the traffic and settled for a disappointing seventh. Settling in with the No. 3 post position, the stage is set for a big run under new and more experienced jockey John Velazquez.

But he is sitting at 4-1 odds to take home the win. Still not a great value.

How about Dullahan?

At 6-1, Dullahan is an intriguing bet for two reasons. Despite getting off to an awful start, he finished third at the Kentucky Derby. Now he has enjoyed extra rest after skipping the Preakness and enters Belmont fresh, more than capable of handling the 1.5 mile distance. His long strides and strong endurance are perfectly suited for this track.

I love Dullahan at 6-1, but if you are looking for even longer odds, try out Street Life at 18-1.

He has two wins in his last five starts and is very similar to Bodemeister.  He didn’t begin his racing career until January, has outstanding speed and is one of the big wildcards of the event.

At 18-1, you could do much worse.

There is a ton of value all over the board on Saturday, and as long as you don’t fall for the hype and go with the overwhelming favorite, the odds of cashing in big are going to increase tremendously.

My advice is either Dullahan or Street Life.
