UFC on FX 3: Mike Pyle vs Josh Neer Head-to Toe Breakdown

Anthony FuscoJun 5, 2012

Two crafty UFC veterans will throw down on UFC on FOX 3 card. Mike Pyle is a submission wizard coming of a TKO victory at UFC 142.

Josh Neer is a tough test for anybody, as he is currently riding a two fight win streak in the octagon after submitting Duane Ludwig in his last bout.

Both are tough competitors who are always down for a tough and entertaining fight. In the following slides let's take a look at who's got the better chance of taking home the win.

Pyle or Neer?

Striking

1 of 5

Josh Neer knows how to throw leather. This isn't a hit to Mike Pyle who has excellent striking in his own right, but Neer steals the show here.

Neer is on a six fight winning streak with all of those wins being stoppage victories. Four of the six were via TKO. His record sits at 33-10 with 17 of those wins coming in the form of a KO or TKO.

Neer has the striking advantage in this one, as he has looked better than ever since rejoining the UFC. If Pyle tries to bring the fight to Neer, he will get outstruck and beaten up.

Edge: Neer

Wrestling/Grappling

2 of 5

Mike Pyle without a question has the better wrestling skills in this one.

He's a smart fighter and will use his wrestling to put Neer on the mat where he can go to work. Pyle comes out and fights the smart fight as you could see in his victories against John Hathaway and Ricardo Almeida.

His wrestling has improved significantly. Couple that with a smart game plan and he should be able to control the power-punching Neer in this area.

Edge: Pyle

Submissions

3 of 5

Mike Pyle is a submission wizard.

Once the fight hits the ground he's always dangerous to any opponent. Josh Neer has good submission skills, but on the ground Pyle is an animal winning 16 of his 22 wins by submission.

Pyle holds the distinction of being the only fighter to ever submit Jon Fitch. If Neer decides to test his submissions against Pyle's, he will be in for a short night.

Intangibles

4 of 5

Both of these fighters are crafty veterans of the sport. Both are coming off of wins.

Many people are fooled by Pyle's age of 36, but don't be. He's in his fighting prime and has looked fantastic as of late except for a blip against rising star Rory MacDonald.

Both men have been around the sport for a long time with a wealth of experience between them. Pyle is the former WEC welterweight champion, and both men have an incredible 20 UFC fights combined.

Neer has the sheer power and the heart, but Pyle has the experience and the smart game planning that I expect will play a huge factor in this fight.

Edge: Pyle

Prediction

5 of 5

This fight is between two longtime competitors of the sport. I expect Josh Neer will come out and take the center of the octagon early and try and force Pyle to trade with him.

Pyle will have none of this, as he will wait for an opening and secure the takedown. From there Neer will try to defend himself, but on the ground it's only a matter of time before Pyle locks in a fight-ending submission.

Prediction

Mike Pyle defeats Josh Neer via submission (Rear Naked Choke) in the second round.
