WWE: Why the Company Needs a Chris Jericho/Christian Feud to Happen

David LevinJun 5, 2012

Taking a look at the WWE roster and potential feuds to recreate some of the drama lost over the last year or so is a tricky proposition.

Let’s see—Edge retired, Alberto Del Rio is just returning from injury, Rey Mysterio is MIA, Randy Orton has been suspended for violating the company’s wellness policy, Chris Jericho almost created an international incident and was suspended indefinitely and Wade Barrett is still recovering from an injury.

Shall I continue?

Where is Drew McIntrye? Kofi Kingston and R-Truth are the best tag team in the company and Jack Swagger and Dolph Ziggler are jobbers if they aren’t in tag-team competition.

And our good friend, John Cena, is fighting all the old superstars like Kane, Big Show and that “veteran” Brock Lesnar.

Where have all the good men gone?

If the WWE was hell-bent on bringing back old-school wrestling to the “PG Era,” then why can’t it take another page out of the good book of wrestling and look to an old rivalry that would kill it in the ring and in vignettes?

Bring back Chris Jericho (when his suspension is lifted) and have him challenge Christian. Whether the Intercontinental Title is on the line is irrelevant. The two super-popular Canadian stars would tear the house down at any event they headline.

And, sorry to CM Punk and Daniel Bryan, this feud could be considered the “Feud of the Year” in professional wrestling.

About a decade ago, the two wrestled together and as enemies (even fought over the affections of one Trish Stratus), and proved that by using each other's similarities, they could sell for each other like no other opponents in the WWE at the time. And, by the way, the wrestling at that time between the two was pretty good as well.

I am not saying it would be the same, having seen both of them grow some and age has affected at least Jericho, but the fans would love to see this happen.

And they can thank Randy Orton for this “dream” matchup.

Both wrestlers are in a position of importance with the WWE right now. Christian is the sixth man of the company and fills a role much needed with the issues of injury, suspension and uneven branding. He in some ways is more important than a John Cena or a CM Punk because of versatility.

Jericho needs a strong comeback from his time off. His feud with CM Punk that led to title matches was not as good in my opinion as it should have been. Maybe that is ring rust. Maybe that is the fan base changing its opinions. Maybe that is poor writing of a script that could and should have been better.

Who knows?

Jericho/Christian would essentially be a Jericho/HBK matchup—similar styles that mesh well in the ring and give the fans the drama they crave. CM Punk and Daniel Bryan do that right now, but the addition of Kane to the card at “No Way Out” should diminish the value of these two superstars. That, again in my opinion, is a shame.

If anyone is listening, book the matches now for the next few months and take it through Summer Slam and see what happens.

If the WWE can hang its hat on Punk/Bryan, Jericho/Christian and maybe something like John Cena and another superstar (Randy Orton in a heel turn or Cody Rhodes?), then the established is re-established. And anyone who thinks those three or four feuds won’t be worthy of hot summer nights, then they really are not a true wrestling fan.

This would be the time where we could see the WWE dip back into the time machine and create magic with two veteran superstars that get it. And, in this case, it works and possibly saves what could be a long, hot and dull summer wrestling season.
