Alex Rodriguez Tested Positive for Steroids in 2003

Bronx Baseball DailyFeb 7, 2009

Everyone knew Alex Rodriguez played for the Texas Rangers in 2003 and won the MVP award with 47 home runs, but what people didn’t know was that he also tested positive for steroids.

According to Selena Roberts and David Epstein of SI.com, Rodriguez’s name was among 104 other players who tested positive when players were randomly tested by MLB. The tests were part of a survey to see if further testing was necessary and were supposed to be confidential.

The report also states that in 2004 there were a few ball players who were warned ahead of time that their random test was coming. According to SI’s sources A-Rod may have been among the players who were tipped off to what was supposed to be an unannounced test.

According to SI’s four independent sources A-Rod tested positive for testosterone and testosterone and an anabolic steroid known by the brand name Primobolan. Primobolan is also known as methenolone, supposedly it became popular around that time because it isn’t as noticeable and is harder to trace than Deca-Durabolin.

The supposed-to-have-been-sealed records came to light when they were seized from their Long Beach, CA lab where they had been stored as part of the BALCO case. Since the search warrant used to procure them was only supposed to be for the 10 players involved in the BALCO case Arod’s results are not likely to be admissible in any courts.

When approached for comment on the issue Rodriguez deferred all questions to the player’s union and denied any further comments.

Now 33-years-old the Yankees expected A-Rod would eventually break Barry Bonds’ home run record when they signed him to a 10-year $275 million deal last off-season. SI reported that there is no language about possible steroid use in the contract.

If that is true, because of the inadmissible nature of this test it is unlikely that A-Rod will receive any punishment for this other than a new set of heckles at Fenway Park.
