Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Latest Status on Boxing's Biggest Tease

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

The fight that anyone who is remotely interested in boxing wants to see is Manny Pacquiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Unfortunately, we aren’t any nearer to seeing that bout than we were years ago, when both fighters put their undisputed mark on the sport and became the two best in the world.

Money Mayweather is currently serving an 87-day prison sentence for misdemeanor battery and harassment. Pac-Man is getting set to fight Timothy Bradley on June 9. Both men could not get anything agreed upon before their current situations, and it doesn’t look like much will change when they have free time again.

In fact, it doesn’t look like it will ever get closer to happening than back in 2010, when the two parties had a contract drawn up with pages upon pages of details, according to Kevin Iole of Yahoo! Sports.

Pac-Man’s camp disagreed with Money’s random drug testing requirement and decided to duck out. It has since offered to accept those terms but has not been able to find its way back to a 50-50 split of the finances—which was agreed to at that time.

Las Vegas, which would likely be the host of any potential match between these two, also doesn’t feel prepared.

According to Iole:

"

"The potential of a Pacquiao–Mayweather match-up highlights the need for a large capacity, 40,000-plus-seat stadium in our community," MGM Resorts VP of Public Affairs Gordon Absher said. "But a once-in-a-lifetime boxing match is by no means the only such event that could be hosted there. MGM Resorts supports the concept of a multi-purpose, 50,000-seat stadium currently being discussed at UNLV."

"

Unfortunately, it takes years to build stadiums like that, and the two fighters will not be in their prime forever. Mayweather is 35, Pacquiao is 33 and both have loads of fights under their respective belts.

When Money gets out of jail, and Pac-Man is recovering from whatever the results are of his bout with Bradley, they need to sit down at the bargaining table and get something hashed out before it is too late.
