Luka Modric: Is Tottenham Midfielder Paris Saint-Germain's Next Target?

Christopher AlmerasJun 3, 2018

Paris Saint-Germain head coach Carlo Ancelotti has now turned his attention to his former league to strengthen his squad this summer. According to reports in the Metro, Ancelotti is interested in bringing Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric to Paris. Ancelotti’s interest in Modric goes back to his days as Chelsea’s manager.

Despite PSG’s seemingly unlimited budget, obtaining Modric’s services will be a difficult task. Tottenham rebuffed attempts by Chelsea last summer to sign the Croatian star. With no shortage of suitors trying to pry Gareth Bale away from Spurs this summer, Harry Redknapp will be resigned to keeping at least one of his two best players in the fold.

PSG’s main draw for Modric may be its qualification for the Champions League, a draw other suitors of the playmaker can offer as well. With Tottenham missing out on the Champions League due to Chelsea’s finals victory, they may have trouble holding onto Modric. Players are attracted by the opportunity to play in Europe’s top competition, and Modric is no different.

A downfall in their recruitment of Modric is PSG’s depth in the midfield. With Jeremy Menez, Javier Pastore, Blaise Matuidi, Nene and Thiago Motta, midfield is the deepest position for PSG. Modric may be hesitant to join such a crowded midfield. With other players who share a similar skill set, Modric’s time on the pitch could very well be split.

With their rumored interest, PSG is leaving no doubt their intentions on being a major player in Europe this season. With Napoli's Ezequiel Lavezzi reportedly in the fold, the Parisian summer transfers are taking shape. Modric may be the player that completes Leonardo’s vision for their attack, but only if Spurs open the exit door.

Modric is an extraordinary talent, and every team is interested in having a player of his abilities on their roster. It is unlikely Spurs will allow him to leave, and more unlikely that PSG would be his preferred destination. In the end, PSG would be better off splashing out cash to solidify their defense if they truly want to make an impact in Europe.
