Oregon Football: 5 Recruiting Advantages Oregon Can Use

Joe PenkalaJun 3, 2012

Throughout the year, fans may be focused on how things will be going on the field but head coaches always have one eye on the field but also another eye off the field. Head coaches always need to make sure they have things in line for the upcoming recruiting class because it shapes the future of the program.

For the Oregon Ducks, head coach Chip Kelly has done an outstanding job of bringing some great talent over to Eugene. Since taking over in 2009, Kelly has led the Ducks to three straight conference titles and people have seen new players come in and out of his system and have similar success.

When Kelly is in a living room or on the phone trying to convince some of these players to come to Eugene, here are five things that he can hang his hat on as an advantage in the recruiting wars.

Amazing Facilities

One of the biggest advantages Oregon has is the amazing facilities that were built for them. As many know, Phil Knight is a graduate of Oregon and he has been more than generous with the program.

At Oregon, recruits are treated with seeing a state of the art weight room, an indoor practice field and in the locker room they have underwater treadmills, a health and wellness bar, a dentist, countless televisions, gaming systems, medical treatment centers and personal lockers that include their own personal ventilation systems.

Uniforms

When talking about Oregon, it is impossible to not talk about their uniforms. In conjunction with Nike and Phil Knight, the Ducks have been the poster child for innovation and change in college football.

One thing that many recruits may not know when learning more about Oregon is that Nike has internship positions for players to help with uniform development for the football program.

Autzen Stadium

After walking through all of the other facilities that the Ducks have to offer, recruits are then taken in to Autzen Stadium and it is an amazing site.

Once you walk down the tunnel, you enter Autzen Stadium and get to see the view that all recruits dream of, being the center of attention in a major college football stadium. The only thing better is when the recruit gets to be there for a live game.

Offensive and Defensive Exposure

4 of 5

One of the things that a recruit has to think about is what kind of exposure they will receive at their school of choice, especially if they are hoping to head to the NFL. At Oregon, Chip Kelly has both sides of the ball covered.

For offensive players, Kelly has been a master at putting players into open space and allowing their talents to shine in a high-octane offense. On the other side of the ball, Kelly also has implemented a system where the defense is constantly rotating and bringing in fresh players, meaning more playing time for non-starters.

Either way, Kelly is also a believer in the idea that his best players will play regardless of what year they are, so if you are a recruit with the talent to get the job done, you will be on the field.

Chip Kelly

After everything is said and done and all of Chip Kelly's pitches are on the table, it comes down to him as a coach. Since taking over, Kelly has won three straight conference titles, been to two Rose Bowls and appeared in the national championship.

Along with his success on the field, Kelly has a deep love for his country and is also loyal to his players. Unlike some coaches, Kelly backs his players almost to a fault. As a player or parent, you can make your choice with the confidence that Kelly will make sure that if any issue comes up, Kelly will get all the facts instead of making a knee-jerk reaction.
