Belmont Stakes 2012: Why I'll Have Another Is Not Worth Your Wager

Alex KayJun 5, 2018

I’ll Have Another can currently be gambled on at 3-2 for the 2012 Belmont Stakes (according to Bovada.lv).

Those odds are absolutely awful and it simply isn’t worth it to pile money on the Triple Crown hopeful.

Here’s why.

Public Hammering

After winning the Preakness and Kentucky Derby, everyone and their mothers want to put money on I’ll Have Another at Belmont.

When that much money comes in on a horse, it greatly changes the odds and makes them extremely unfavorable.

While I’ll Have another is arguably the best contender in the thoroughbred race, he is not that far ahead of the pack and the payout is just awful for the risk.

Not Rested

I’ll Have Another’s chief competitors, Dullahan and Union Rags, both ran in the Derby but elected to sit out at Pimlico following their disappointing finishes.

On the other hand, the winner of both Triple Crown races this year hasn’t had a break. He’s been running hard and training hard for the big events and it might start to wear on him.

The pressure and exhaustion has definitely weighed down heavily on other Triple Crown hopefuls at Belmont, which is a huge reason why there hasn’t been a winner since 1978.

Controversy

Doug O’Neill—I’ll Have Another’s trainer—has been engulfed in controversy about doping and will be serving a suspension after the race.

The new rules at Belmont are going to have an impact on how the horse trains and even might impact how it is fed. Not to mention, it has to move to a new stable after getting settled in right after Preakness.

These factors will play key roles in the success, or lack of, I’ll Have Another at the Belmont Stakes.
