French Open 2012: Day 5 Scores, Results and Recap

Timothy RappJun 7, 2018

It's starting to get interesting at Roland Garros.

Day 5 saw a handful of upsets, an epic match for a usual suspect and a top player fighting through injury and adversity en route to advancing to the third round.

It was a fun day indeed. Let's get to recapping.

Yes, you read that correctly—the final set was unbelievable and exhausting to watch, though certainly not as exhausting as it must have been to play.

And it begs the question—what is it with Isner playing incredibly long matches in Grand Slams against Frenchmen?

It's a disappointing result for Isner, the top-ranked American left in the tournament. But give credit where credit is due. Mahieu had more in the tank after five hours and 41 minutes—two hours, 28 minutes in the final set—and moves on to the third round.

You know the old saying: No pain, no advancing to the next round of the French Open.

I may have taken some liberties with the old saying.

Nonetheless, Murray battled through an injured back that nearly caused him to retire from the match, overcame a poor first set and cruised through the final two sets to move on.

Murray had a tough enough task entering this tournament trying to overcome Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer attempting to win his first Grand Slam. Adding an ailing back to that will make the task impossible.

Varvara Lepchenko from the United States is one of the surprise stories in France, Maria Kirilenko's exit makes me sad, Rafael Nadal should be given an automatic bye to the quarterfinals at this point and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga survived the battle of hyphenated first names.

Bring on the third round.

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets pack more punch than Junior dos Santos.
