Michael Kidd-Gilchrist: Lottery Teams with Best Chance of Landing Kentucky Star
Anthony Davis has established himself as the top overall pick in the NBA draft, but after that several players, including Kentucky teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, are vying for draft position. It's a battle that will likely go right down to the wire.
Let's take a look at three teams with the best chance to land the talented small forward based on a combination of need and where they are picking in the lottery.
Washington Wizards
The Wizards have several holes to fill before contending for the playoffs, but none of them are bigger than small forward. Kidd-Gilchrist has the ability to step right into the lineup as the main supporting cast member for John Wall.
It's a good fit because Wall will be the focal point of the offense and Jordan Crawford emerged as a solid perimeter scorer. That will allow Kidd-Gilchrist to do what he does best, namely attack the basket and defend, without having a lot of pressure on him to score.
He should still be on the board because he's not really a good match for the Charlotte Bobcats since they don't have the scoring base necessary to maximize his efficiency.
Cleveland Cavaliers
If the Wizards decide to pass, the Cavaliers are the next best place for Kidd-Gilchrist to land. Omri Casspi wasn't able to fill the team's void at small forward and while Alonzo Gee was better, he doesn't have nearly as much upside as the Kentucky product.
Putting Kidd-Gilchrist with Rookie of the Year Kyrie Irving would give Cleveland the key pieces necessary to start turning things around. The Cavs also have Tristan Thompson, who started to make progress near season's end. That's a solid young trio to build around.
Getting drafted by the Cavaliers would lead to the inevitable LeBron James comparison talk, which would put him under the microscope, but otherwise it seems like a nice fit.
Sacramento Kings
The Kings would be ecstatic if Kidd-Gilchrist were still on the board when they pick at No. 5. I don't think he will slide down the board any farther than that considering how much hype surrounds him after Kentucky's national title run.
Sacramento already has a bunch of guards and a solid post player in DeMarcus Cousins, so a dynamic swingman like Kidd-Gilchrist is exactly what they need. He will give the team a much-needed defensive boost and should receive plenty of playing time right away.
His wide range of skills make him an ideal target for any lottery team that isn't looking for a pure scorer, but it's hard to him imagine getting past the Kings on draft day.
