French Open 2012: Day 4 Scores, Results and Recap

Timothy RappJun 2, 2018

The fourth day at the French Open and first day of the second round may have mostly lacked for major upsets, but it did not lack for compelling matches or intriguing storylines.

Several top players on the men's side, including a tournament favorite, were tested, while Venus Williams took to the court hoping to remain in the tournament a day after her sister Serena's shocking elimination. It's safe to say Venus did not avenge her sister's loss.

Oh, and one of France's best hopes on the women's side was knocked out of the tournament.

But enough small talk—let's bust a recap in this joint.

The French Open Was Not Kind to the Williams Sisters

This one was never in question.

Christopher Clarey from The New York Times has pretty much everything you need to know about this match covered:

"

'I felt like I played; that pretty much sums it up,' Williams said after Radwanska's 6-2, 6-3 victory that was just as lopsided as the score.

Radwanska, a major star in her native Poland who is in the midst of her finest season at age 23, seized on all five of her break-point opportunities. She made only six unforced errors to Williams's 33 and won 56 points to her 37.

"

Oh, and this—the 2012 French Open is now the first Grand Slam where neither sister advanced to the third round, though Venus was playing for the first time at a major tournament since being diagnosed with Sjogren's syndrome, so some rust was to be expected.

One way or another, I'm sure both sisters are looking forward to leaving Roland Garros behind.

Roger Federer Was Shaken But Never Stirred Against Adrian Ungur

Adrian Ungur 327(8)3

Roger Federer won his record-setting 234th Grand Slam match on Wednesday. But he didn't do it without a test from Adrian Ungur along the way.

Federer cruised in the first two sets then found himself in a battle in the third, surprisingly dropping the tiebreaker to Unger, who will now likely brag about the fact that he took a set from Federer for the rest of his life.

I know I would.

Of course, Federer recovered in the fourth set. He now marches on to the next round like he's done 233 times before.

Gilles Simon Fights Past Another American Opponent

First, he had the match all but won. Then he lost all the momentum. So logically, he didn't lose a game in the final set.

That's pretty much how the second round went for Gilles Simon.

For the second time in this tournament, an American player gave him a heck of a fight. Remember, Ryan Harrison was this close to taking the first two sets against Simon. He failed to do so, of course, and Simon dominated the rest of the way.

On Wednesday, Baker had all the momentum in the world after rallying from two sets down to win a tiebreaker in the third and cruise in the fourth. But Simon was having none of that, and the Frenchmen put his foot down in front of the adoring Roland Garros crowd.

For what it's worth, Baker's comeback to tennis is one hell of as story. Be sure to check it out—he's a player worth rooting for.

Eighth-Seeded Marion Bartoli Upset

Bartoli was a semifinalist in the French Open last year. This year, she didn't survive the second round.

Here's your stat of the match: Bartoli committed 14 double-faults.

That's always a recipe for defeat, one that certainly tastes all the more bitter for Bartoli in her home country.

No surprises here. Djokovic and del Potro labored a bit but ultimately prevailed. Azarenka barely broke a sweat. Ana Ivanovic made me sweat.

Form mostly held over the first day of the second round. But who knows what will happen tomorrow?

Hit me up on Twitter—my tweets pack more punch than Junior dos Santos.
