French Open 2012 Results: Players Who Stood out the Most Today

Daniel O'BrienJun 7, 2018

Day 4 of the 2012 French Open saw several standout performances, as competitors dueled for a chance to advance to the third round at Roland Garros.

There were a few under-the-radar matches that separated the contenders from the pretenders, but they were all overshadowed by Roger Federer's landmark achievement. He added to an already-glittering resume by breaking the all-time Grand Slam match victories record.

Who else looked impressive during Wednesday's action in Paris?

Here are a few players whose exploits stood out the most today.

Stanislas Wawrinka

1 of 5

He started out slow, but the last couple of sets for Stanislas Wawrinka against Pabjo Andujar were dominant.

After losing the second set, the Swiss competitor shifted into high gear and cleaned up the third and fourth sets, 6-2, 6-1.

Wawrinka dispatched the Spaniard with an excellent first serve, including seven aces on the day. He also dominated Andujar when it came to winners, as he notched 67 throughout the match.

We'll see if he can carry this late-match momentum into his encounter with 11th-seeded Gilles Simon.

Tomas Berdych

2 of 5

Paris native Michael Llodra might have had home court advantage against Tomas Berdych, but there wasn't much else for him to hang his hat on against the Czech star.

Berdych handled his business much easier than the other top seeds, including Roger Federer and even Novak Djokovic.

He wasn't astounding in any one area, but the most impressive aspect of his game was his break-point conversion ability. Berdych broke Llodra's serve five times in seven tries, while Llodra didn't come close to breaking Berdych at any point in the match.

Maybe Berdych is back in his 2010 form, when he reached the semifinals at Roland Garros.

Marin Cilic

3 of 5

In his encounter with former World No. 1, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Marin Cilic survived a first-set tiebreaker and then tore through the next two sets.

The towering Croatian was aggressive enough and assertive enough to overcome Ferrero's initial onslaught. He was just a little bit better in every area, which added up to a convincing victory.

Cilic attacked the net a bit more than Ferrero and also took care of enough break points to gain the upper hand in the last couple sets. He'll need to play even better than that in his upcoming duel with Juan Martin Del Potro.

Kevin Anderson

4 of 5

Horacio Zeballos put up a little bit of a fight, but Kevin Anderson used his lethal serve to dispatch the Argentinian lefty in four sets.

How good was Anderson's serve Wednesday? He scorched Zeballos by racking up 21 aces and converting 85 percent on his first serve.

The 6'8" South African bounced back after a subpar second set to play an extremely clean brand of tennis to finish the match. He committed far fewer errors than Zeballos on his way to victory.

This is Anderson's career-best French Open so far, and he could make it even sweeter with an upset over Tomas Berdych in the third round.

Roger Federer

5 of 5

Last, but not least, we must include the impressive feat Roger Federer accomplished with his win over Adrian Ungur.

He won his 234th career Grand Slam match, breaking Jimmy Connor's Open Era record. It is yet another achievement that helps cement his legacy as the best tennis player of our time.

Federer didn't have his pristine stuff, and he lost a third-set tiebreaker to Ungur, but the Swiss maestro still had enough to get the win and break the long-standing record.

With the record now in his rearview mirror, Federer sets his sights on Nicolas Mahut in the third round.
