College Football Playoff: Shopping Title Game to Highest Bid Is a Brilliant Play

While the BCS Meetings have passed for the time being, the fate of the college football post-season is still being decided upon as the SEC and Big 12 meetings are going on this week.

At the SEC Meetings, it was revealed that there is a plan in the works to shop the Championship Game to the highest bidding city as a means of generating competition and creating a true event atmosphere around the contest.

What a great move to make for college football. The sport has already transitioned from random sites for pseudo-championship contests in the pre-BCS era of the game.

The No. 1 team going to their designated bowl site to play someone, while the No. 2 or 3 teams played someone else with the hopes of garnering enough votes to pass the top team. Then the shift came to more of an event, as the BCS came to fruition and No. 1 was playing No. 2 at a predetermined site for the crown.

Now the sport is about to take the next step, instead of just rotating the game between four predetermined sites, college football will be looking at their own Super Bowl of sorts. A game that cities are dying to get in their stadium and, if the price is right, they can have to put on a show.

No more just Miami, New Orleans, Glendale and Pasadena hosting Championship Games. Now Dallas, who has been positioning for the title game since the new stadium came to fruition, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Houston and other cities will be in the running for the ball game.

The more folks bidding for the game, the more cash that is going to be flowing into the coffers of the college football community. That's for everyone, not just the game's two participants. Payouts can increase to the conferences and that is something that everyone is looking for; more money.

All in all, this measure is a solid move to make the game an event that is all its own. Instead of a city setting up to host two games in a week's time, as we've seen with the rotating sites; we'll have a city spending their efforts and money to put on the show college football deserves to end the season.

Much like NCAA basketball makes the Final Four a roaming event given to the highest bidder, and the NFL uses the Super Bowl in similar fashion, so will college football. If your city pays the bucks to get the show and then handles everything well, expect the power brokers to have you on the shortlist for repeats.
