Which NFL Teams Are Already Feeling Buyer's Remorse About Their Rookies?

Jun 7, 2018

The next step in the offseason process after the 2012 NFL Draft is the NFL OTA’s practices, which have allowed some teams to realize they have made huge mistakes with their draft selections.

It is always disappointing for a team to realize immediately after the draft that the rookie they selected is having trouble adapting to the league. Other rookies disappoint when it turns out they aren’t a good match schematically with the team that selected them.

Rookies who are selected high in the draft are supposed to be immediate impact players, so difficulties adapting or succumbing to injuries at this point in the offseason are factors that could lead teams to have early buyer’s remorse.

None of this is to say that these players can’t go on to have outstanding NFL careers, but as of right now, the teams are certainly not happy with how things are developing.

Let’s take a look at a few rookies who are making their teams feel buyer’s remorse already.

Dontari Poe, DT, Kansas City Chiefs

Dontari Poe was a well-documented risk from the beginning. He has extreme athleticism that he showed off before the draft, but had little production at the collegiate level. That didn’t stop the Kansas City Chiefs from selecting him with the No. 11 overall pick in the draft.

Poe was selected to be the nose tackle of the future for the Chiefs. Reports are already piling in that during OTA’s Poe could only line up in pass-rushing situations. He was nowhere to be seen in running scenarios.

Now, to be the nose tackle of the future and be worthy of an 11th overall selection, Poe has to be able to play in all situations, not just be a specialist. It’s still early, but Chiefs brass have to be a bit concerned by the risk they took.

Michael Floyd, WR, Arizona Cardinals

Michael Floyd was considered one of the top two talents at wide receiver in the draft, so the Arizona Cardinals made him pick No. 13 in the draft. It was widely believed that Floyd would be the number-two receiver across from Larry Fitzgerald.

So far that hasn’t been the case at all. Floyd has yet to line up with the first team in Cardinals’ OTA’s. Floyd has the skill set to be a number-one receiver in the NFL, so it is perplexing that he isn’t already running with the first team.

Whatever the reason may be, Floyd not running with the first team is a bad start.

Morris Claiborne, CB, Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys felt so strongly about Morris Claiborne that they traded up for him in the first round, selecting him with the No. 6 overall pick. Claiborne was arguably the best corner available in the draft, so he and the Cowboys were the perfect match with corner being such a miserable position for the ‘Boys a year ago.

Claiborne is still dealing with a wrist injury and hasn’t been able to participate in camps with the team thus far. It’s now being reported that he won’t be able to take part until late July.

With Claiborne being such a high draft pick, this is disappointing because he is expected to have an immediate impact. Missing important dates such as these while trying to make the transition to the NFL could be a serious detriment to the team this year.

Brandon Weeden, QB, Cleveland Browns

Brandon Weeden was one of the most controversial selections in the draft when the Cleveland Browns selected to take him with the No. 22 pick. Weeden is a 28-year-old rookie who played primarily out of the shotgun in college.

The concerns about Weeden now seem warranted because he fumbled several snaps in rookie minicamp. Considering Weeden has hardly ever taken snaps from under center, it makes sense if the Browns front office is starting to sweat about taking such a huge gamble.

It’s early, but the struggles of Weeden are only bringing more negative media coverage to the organization and further splitting the fan base between him and Colt McCoy.
