What is the Greatest Missed Opportunity in WWE History?

Scott KaneFeb 5, 2009

I think WWE is about to miss out on the biggest match in wrestling history. One that would be remembered 20 years down the road.

Historic.

Epic.

Meaningful.

Fascinating.

A few years back, I remember thinking how Wrestlemania XXV would need to be a milestone event for the company. Sure, we will see HHH vs. Edge, Cena vs. Orton, but fans have seen these matches before.

Hype them up all you want, dress them in fancy clothes, and wrap a steel cage around it, but they are not historic or Silver Anniversary-worthy Wrestlemania matches.

Even the HBK vs. Undertaker battle has taken place in the past. To set this Wrestlemania apart from all others, they need a Hulk Hogan vs. Ultimate Warrior, Hogan vs. The Rock or The Rock vs. Steve Austin caliber of a match.

The WWE needs something that fans will never forget. And the damn thing is—they have the main event sitting right there in their hands.

Right in their laps. It would make more money than any other showdown in wrestling PPV history.

Just. Pull. The. Trigger.

Austin is a lock for Wrestlemania XXV in Texas. He needs to be involved. Austin needs a send off to close the chapter in his amazing career.

For him and the fans, it's time to say goodbye to Mr. 3:16—but damn it, do it in style.

He needs a match that will define his legacy. I'm not talking about a wrestling clinic—that can't happen for him anymore. The "Bionic Redneck" is running out of battery juice.

Nevertheless, he needs a match to underline his position in the industry and to highlight his importance.

He needs to go over someone. He needs to get the 1, 2, 3 and finally put to rest that he was the biggest star there ever was.

He needs to go one-on-one with a man that defined his era but whom Austin wrestled the torch from and lit an industry on fire.

Ladies and peeps, children of all ages, and for the millions watching at home—WWE needs to give us, for one night only, the biggest main event the industry could ever see.

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin vs. Hulk Hogan

Before you jump on the "but the match would stink" bandwagon, hear me out. Do you really think that the two biggest icons in the industry wouldn't know how to make this match work?

Do you really think that with all the hype, all the grandeur, and all the hysteria this match would invoke, that these two wouldn't know how to milk every emotion out of that live crowd in Texas for all it was worth?

All their faults, weaknesses, injuries, and lack of the ability to really go wrestle would be covered up in raw emotion.

This would be the defining match of our era. This is the last time it can realistically happen. There is no better time or event for this match to finally take place.

Austin's home state. His retirement match. His induction into the WWE Hall of Fame.

The Silver Anniversary of Wrestlemania, the biggest event in the entire industry. Even Hogan has said he'll put Austin over.

Picture the promos, picture the stage, picture the faceoff, imagine the live crowd, imagine the atmosphere.

This is the match that should headline Wrestlemania XXV. Yes, WWE need to establish and build future stars, and they can still do that at the event.

In this match, no young buck is derailed by losing to Hogan or Austin, but we finally get to see who the biggest star in wrestling was, who the true icon of our time is.

Fans get to finally see era vs. era, legend vs. legend, the two men who redefined an industry go one-on-one for the biggest title of all.

Who is the best?

Vince McMahon, make this happen.
