Arsenal Transfer News: Could Jan Vertonghen Be Coming to the Emirates?
Jan Vertonghen was always going to Tottenham Hotspur over the summer—the deal seemed inevitable and many were convinced that Harry Redknapp would lock up the deal in a matter of days.
Yet as the days continue to pass, Spurs' chances of signing the Ajax captain Vertonghen are getting slimmer and slimmer—opening the door for Arsenal to strike.
The Gunners do have the added incentive of playing Champions League Football but more importantly, they have the additional funding that comes from playing in Europe's most prestigious tournament.

Tottenham, on the other hand, do not have the money from Champions League, and Vertonghen himself realizes this.
Courtesy of the Daily Star and CaughtOffside, Vertonghen stated that:
"I’ve said repeatedly that Tottenham are my first choice, but the talks haven’t progressed. They have shown me around, I have met all their key people and their chairman came to meet me on Monday. But Arsenal want me too. They remain a possibility if my Spurs move falls through...
"
For Spurs, Chelsea's triumph in the UEFA Champions League Final over Bayern Munich and their subsequent omission from next year's tournament could cost them a myriad of players over the summer transfer window. It appears it's started with the Belgian captain.
Ajax are asking £12.5m for the defender, and it appears that Spurs simply do not have the money. Arsenal do, however, and they may well swipe Vertonghen from White Hart Lane and bring him to the Emirates.
Just where he would fit into Arsene Wenger's team remains to be seen—perhaps as a defensive midfielder—but Vertonghen would represent a great defensive signing for the Gunners.
Vertonghen won't fight with Ajax and just wants the best deal to be done.
Could Arjen Robben's missed penalty finally start to take effect for Spurs? Vertonghen is hinting yes, but I guess we'll just have to wait and find out.
Where do you think Jan Vertonghen will end up?
