St. Louis Streaker Makes Naked Dash at Busch Stadium to Pay Off Bet

Ian CasselberryMay 25, 2012

After losing four in a row, the St. Louis Cardinals needed a good streak to get back on track. One fan at Busch Stadium Thursday night apparently took that a bit too far and decided to run with it.

Before the seventh inning began, Collin Grundstrom shucked his clothes and ran onto the field, giving the Busch Stadium crowd more than they surely intended to see.

There's your streak, St. Louis. Did anyone tell Grundstrom that the Cards had won three straight games going into Thursday night?

According to the Associated Press, Grundstrom dashed onto the outfield grass wearing nothing but glory to pay off a bet. Wow, I wonder what the other guy's payoff would've been. But give Grundstrom credit: At least he doesn't welch on his bets.

There aren't often quality photos taken of streakers at sporting events. Maybe because photographers know that a picture of a butt-naked man isn't going to be run in newspapers or magazines. Or perhaps the streaker has been apprehended by security by the time an image can be snapped. Not so this time.

But let's give some kudos to AP photographer Jeff Roberson for his composition of Grundstrom's dash. As Joe Sports Fan's Matt Sebek said, the framing on this photo is top-notch. We should be talking Pulitzer here.

Maybe getting that shot was a happy accident. Or maybe Roberson is just that good.

Walk off a hero, indeed.

In the understatement of the night, Busch Stadium's head of security was quoted by the AP as saying that Grundstrom “appeared to have been drinking.”

Well, yeah. Hey, that's why they call beer "liquid courage," man.

Yahoo! Sports' Jeff Passan has much, much more on Grundstrom and his few minutes of fame in a column worth your reading time.
