World Football's Biggest Fails of the Week

Michael CummingsJun 7, 2018

The Champions League final is the biggest, most prestigious match on the club calendar every season.

Thankfully for us, it has also been known to produce plenty of FAILs.

This year was no exception, thanks to everybody's favorite commentator Gary Neville, the coiffure of one Chelsea player and a cheeky British prankster.

All of those stories appear in this week's edition of B/R World Football's Biggest FAILs of the Week.

Keep reading for more.

Hazard Reporting FAIL

1 of 5

Everybody knows who Eden Hazard is.

Nobody seems to know where Lille's Belgian winger will be playing next season.

Not even, it seems, Eden Hazard.

As B/R World Football Lead Writer Will Tidey has pointed out, Hazard's wishy-washy antics are quickly turning him into a hated figure.

But that's not the FAIL. The FAIL came on the part of ESPN Soccernet, which was fooled by a fake Manchester United site claiming that Hazard had signed for United.

"

We hold our hands up. We got duped. By this: rnanutd.com/en/News-And-Fe… twitter.com/ESPNSoccernet/…

— ESPN Soccernet (@ESPNSoccernet) May 21, 2012"

Oops.

In fairness, though, ESPN Soccernet does great work.

BBC Prankster FAIL

2 of 5

ESPN Soccernet wasn't alone in making a high-profile media goof this week.

Following the Champions League final, British prankster Robert Popper phoned the BBC 5 Live radio show claiming to be in possession of the actual match ball.

As Popper explains on his website:

"

Two clips here for you: following Chelsea’s win over Bayern Munich, I – or rather Robin Cooper – called BBC 5 Live’s radio phone-in show, to tell the man all about how I won the actual football from the match…

"

And click play on the video for the clip of BBC running the story as actual news.

If you're confused, Robin Cooper doesn't exist and obviously doesn't have the ball. The man on the phone has a real name, which is Robert Popper—who plays pranks on people for a laugh.

This one is a classic.

Kalou's Hair

3 of 5

While we're on the subject of the Champions League final, we might as well cover Salomon Kalou's hair.

What is it?

Most thought it to be a spider, and the eight legs seem to confirm it. But if that's a spider, it has some decidedly diabolical horns for an arachnid.

Gary Neville Scoregasm, Redux

One more tidbit from what was a FAIL-tastic Champions League final.

You might remember Gary Neville's scoregasmic reaction to Fernando Torres' equalizer for Chelsea against Barcelona in the semifinals.

Well, here's Part Deux (video at left).

So much for the media's impartiality.

Lighting Flares

5 of 5

Lighting flares: Everybody's doing it!

Unfortunately, though, this hooligan, who supports Slovakian club Slovan Bratislava, hasn't figured out that to intimidate your opponents, you might not want to light the flare in your face.

That's got to hurt.
