Neftali Feliz: Texas Rangers Place Righty on DL with Elbow Inflammation

Kenny DeJohnMay 21, 2012

Neftali Feliz transitioned into the starting rotation during spring training for the Texas Rangers, and he has just sustained his first injury that comes with the increased workload.

As reported on Monday by Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, the Rangers placed Feliz on the 15-day disabled list with elbow inflammation.

Although he is in Arlington for an MRI, the Rangers made the wise choice to shut him down rather than wait for the results.

Friday night's command issues may have been an indicator of the discomfort, as he walked five men through 4.2 innings. Out of his 101 pitches, 51 were balls.

This is not the first time this season Feliz experienced discomfort. In spring training, Feliz was shut down for a few days with discomfort in his throwing shoulder.

The remedy for the tightness he experienced was just to be put on a throwing program.

He has been a successful starter in his first season in the rotation, owning a record of 3-1 with an ERA of 3.16.

Even if the injury is not serious, shutting down Feliz for a few weeks won't hurt the Rangers. If anything, his health will make them a stronger team in the long run.

The Rangers currently sit at 26-16, first place in the AL West.
