I'll Have Another Triple Crown: Horses Who Will Ruin Doug O'Neill's Dreams

Tim KeeneyJun 7, 2018

I'll Have Another made yet another improbable comeback at the Preakness, but winning the Triple Crown means getting past a very talented field at the Belmont Stakes.

At Pimlico, the only horse trainer Doug O'Neill had to worry about was Bodemeister. Other than that, it was a relative easy field. I'm not taking anything away from I'll Have Another because it was a brilliant race, but things won't be so easy in New York.

Let's take a look at what horses will give I'll Have Another trouble in his quest for horse racing's greatest feat.

Union Rags

People forget how talented this horse is simply because it was so disappointing at the Kentucky Derby, but take a look at the race again:

Union Rags, who was starting from an inside position, got trapped inside early and wasn't able to get away. For a while, he was near last place, but still managed to put together enough late speed to finish a respectable seventh.

The same thing happened to Union Rags at the Florida Derby, where he finished third.

Still though, if Union Rags and Julien Leparoux get a better starting position, they have the speed and stamina to give I'll Have Another a run for his money at this long track.

Dullahan

Take another look at the Kentucky Derby above. I'll Have Another had a tremendous comeback to beat Bodemeister, but take a gander at the outside and see who is making a similar furious comeback to finish third.

Yup, it was Dullahan, whose owner decided to sit out the Preakness because he was better suited for Belmont.

If that race was just a little bit longer, Dullahan would have passed I'll Have Another, and we wouldn't be talking about the Triple Crown.

Well, Belmont is a little longer.

There is certainly the possibility that Mario Gutierrez could just wait until further down the line to make his push, but there's no doubting Dullahan has the skills to upset I'll Have Another.

Alpha

After Union Rags and Dullahan, the field drops off a bit, but Alpha has the pedigree to surprise I'll Have Another.

If you go down the line of Alpha's family, you'll see horses like A.P. Indy, Seattle Slew, and yes, Secretariat.

He finished a disappointing 11th in the Kentucky Derby after a nice second-place finish at the Grade 1 Wood Memorial, but that just means he could fly under the radar.

Watch out for this horse.
