Champions League Final 2012: Mario Gomez and the Match's Most Impactful Players

Ben ChodosMay 18, 2012

The Champions League final will feature players from both Bayern Munich and Chelsea that are capable of changing the game by themselves.

Managers usually opt to play conservatively in final matches in hope that the other team will make the first mistake.

This means one moment of brilliance from a single player can decide the match.

Both sides have players with creative attacking skills and devastating finishing abilities. Here are the five players most likely to have the biggest impact on the UCL final.

1. Mario Gomez

Speed, size, strength and skill—Gomez has them all. The center forward is the point-man in the Bayern attack and puts constant pressure on opposing defenses.

He has put away 12 goals in the Champions League, which is second only to Lionel Messi's 14 scores.

Gomez is one of the world's premier poachers, and he will be a nightmare for Chelsea's depleted back line, which will be without red-carded captain John Terry.

2. Didier Drogba

Drogba is another prototypical striker with all the attributes one looks for in a premier attacking threat. The 34-year-old has been rejuvenated in the latter part of the season and is a big reason why Chelsea is in the final.

His goal against Barcelona put the defending champs on their heals and allowed the Blues to pack the defense and pull off the upset.

But against Bayern, he will need to do even more as his side will be missing Terry and Branislav Invanovic in the back.

3. Arjen Robben

No footballer in the world has a left foot like Robben's, and the Dutchman may be the one to swing the final Bayern's way.

Robben has the pace and skill to get into scoring position almost at will. Once he's in shooting range, Chelsea keeper Petr Cech will have trouble dealing with the rockets Robben is capable of firing.

The winger will be poised to put together a good match against his former club and earn Bayern its first UCL title since 2001.

4. Franck Ribery

There's no rest for a defense when they go up against Bayern. Dealing with Gomez and Robben is difficult enough, and Ribery can destroy a defense from multiple positions.

Ribery is lethal on the wing, but also capable of moving into the center and attacking up the middle.

The Frenchman has remarkable pace and is deceptively strong. If the Chelsea defense loses track of him for a single second, it could be over for the Blues.

5. Frank Lampard

The Chelsea midfielder has managed to stay consistent as he has grown older and still poses a major threat to defenses every time he takes the pitch.

Even though Lampard has an eight on the back of his jersey, he is Chelsea's No. 10. He has the vision to create for his teammates and the attacking prowess to punish defenders when they give him too much space.

Lampard has brought so much success to Stamford Bridge over the years and he is more than capable of bringing one more trophy back to London this season.
