The House That Manny Built

Kitta ThongsackFeb 2, 2009

Like many Mets fan I have been following the Manny Ramirez saga very closely.  Should we or shouldn't we sign Manny? Sure, his character is questionable but his ability is not.

In the prelude of the second Mets meltdown in the closing months of last season it was evidently clear we needed someone or something. We needed a leader who not only spoke about winning but lead by example.  Clearly, no one grabbed that torch.

Last year's collapse turned what was to be a memorial to Shea Stadium, into it's funeral.  Johan was clearly not enough and our bullpen, while vastly improved, will certainly not be enough. The Braves are clearly on their way back, the Marlins, while young, certainly have the tools to win the NL East and of course Jimmy Rollins and company are the defending World Champs.

In these downtrodden economic times we look to the future, we have no other choice.  Heartbreak after heartbreak we'll never lose our faith.  We have a beautiful new field and we need a fresh start. Mets fans need to believe we're not living a real life, "Ground Hog Day". How many times are we going to get Lucied before Charlie Brown figures this one out?

Manny Ramirez isn't just an option he's a must.  Last year he hit 20 HR's and batted in 68 while hitting a measly .299 for a team trying to run him out of town.  Goes to LA and doubles his production in 53 games.  Hits .396, booms 17 more HR's and finishes with 53 additional RBI's.  All this while being the consummate professional.

Sure he does some questionable things on the field from time to time but we're New Yorker's.  We idolize those that dare to be different. The glory days of the 80's were lead by a bunch of eccentrics thats why we still love those teams. He's a native and his homecoming makes sense fiscally (Ramirez gear; fake dreadlocks and jerseys=hotcakes) and more importantly statistically.  Omar, you've always made moves that have made us proud. Make us proud one more time.
