Aston Villa: Is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the Man to Manage the Villains?

Joe TanseyJun 7, 2018

Most Premier League fans remember Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as a threat up front for Manchester United for close to a decade.

Most of Solskjaer's success came mostly from 1996 to 2003, even though he stayed with United until 2007—those last four seasons were marred by injury.

Now, the former Norwegian manager is in charge of Molde in the Norwegian Tippeligaen and has led the club he played for for two seasons to the 2011 league title.

This season in Norway, they play from March to November. After nine matches, the club is in second place, one point behind the leader Stromsgodset.

While everyone is talking about Wigan manager Roberto Martinez as the next big thing in management, Aston Villa has turned elsewhere and has begun talking to Solskjaer about its managerial vacancy.

Solskjaer has been given permission to talk with the Villains from his bosses at Molde about the vacancy at Villa Park.

The former United forward will face different circumstances if he chooses to take the job, as he will not be looking to win a title. Instead, he will be in charge of rebuilding the club after its disastrous season where it finished in 16th place.

However, Solskjaer was presented with the same situation when he started with Molde, as that team fought off relegation the season before the 39-year-old took over at the club.

Whether or not he is the answer at Villa Park, Solskjaer will definitely bring in a winning mentality from his time in Norway—something that Alex McLeish did not have when he took over from relegated Birmingham last season.
