Florida State Football: Why ESPN's Evaluation of FSU Is Spot-on

Austyn HumphreyJun 7, 2018

Jimbo Fisher has done excellently recruiting at Florida State. Following the ESPN rankings, the 'Noles have been ranked sixth, first and second in recruiting.

ESPN today also looked at what the Seminoles must do to improve themselves for the upcoming season. Normally, I disagree with at least part of many analysts' theories or opinions just because I usually have a different opinion. But this time, the guys at the network have it right.

When Desmond Howard, Kirk Herbstreit and the gang gathered to talk today, some useful ideas were proposed. Jimbo Fisher, like his football mentor, Nick Saban, prefers the rushing game. On the other hand, FSU was 102nd when running the football.

So, the Seminoles need to go back to basics. Pitches and catches should be the name of the game. Let's face it, the Seminoles can't run due to their young offensive line. The answer is to throw the conservative playbook out of the window. Go back to pitch and catches, screens and quick pass plays. Let quarterback E.J. Manuel run the ball more, and don't get all fancy with those play-action passes. Manuel generally has gotten sacked or had to at least throw the ball out of bounds.

Now, some fans might be hesitant with giving the offense free reign. E.J. Manuel, Devonta Freeman and the offensive unit could never get consistent and not score on drives. A great counterpoint was introduced during the analysts' discussion. Sure, the Seminoles averaged an anemic 2.4 yards per carry last year, making scoring drives a gamble between a touchdown or a punt.

The defense redeemed the season; their rushing defense was tops in the nation, permitting only 2.3 yards per carry. As a result, the Seminoles will almost always win great field position! That means shorter drives to the end zone, which allow for the necessary riskier play-calling.

Combine that with the schedule, and it looks like Florida State will finally regale its university with another conference championship.
