Auburn Football Recruiting: Breaking Down Chances of Landing QB Kevin Olsen

Barrett SalleeMay 31, 2018

It's no secret that Auburn is searching for a pro-style quarterback in the class of 2013, and Wednesday was a good news/bad news day in terms of quarterback recruiting on The Plains.

The bad news was that the Tigers missed out on Cooper Bateman, who is the No. 4 pro-style quarterback in the country, according to 247Sports.com. To make matters worse for the Tigers, Bateman committed to their archrival, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The good news was that Kevin Olsen, who is one spot behind Bateman on 247Sports.com's ranking of pro-style quarterbacks, narrowed his list down to a top three—one of which is the Auburn Tigers.

Speaking to Brian Dohn of Scout.com, Olsen announced that his final three were Auburn, Miami and Wisconsin.

So what are the chances that Olsen finds his way to Auburn? Not good, according to JC Shurburtt of 247Sports.com.

Hear Kevin Olsen to Miami or Wisconsin. #Canes #badgers #Top247

Olsen is the younger brother of Greg Olsen, the former Miami Hurricane and current Carolina Panther tight end. He's clearly familiar with the area due to his brother's experience. Plus, junior quarterback Stephen Morris has recently been medically cleared following back surgery, and should be the starter this fall ahead of sophomore Ryan Williams. That allows Olsen the ability to redshirt and compete for the starting job in 2014.

Wisconsin is in the same situation as Miami, personnel-wise. The Badgers have junior Danny O'Brien—the 2010 ACC Rookie of the Year—transferring from Maryland this summer. O'Brien is likely to win the starting job in fall camp, which means that playing time is available in Madison for Olsen.

Is playing time the ultimate deciding factor for Olsen? If it is, then that may be why Shurbutt thinks that Auburn trails. Sophomore Kiehl Frazier didn't win the starting job this spring, but he came close, and he will still be around even if Olsen redshirts.

Auburn's staff is known for being relentless recruiters, and Bateman's commitment to Alabama will only intensify the search for a pro-style quarterback in the class of 2013.

*Update*

The chances were "slim-to-none," and "slim" appears to have left the building.

Bleacher Report's "Full Ride" tracked down Olsen's father, Chris Olsen, who said that Auburn is out of the running for the services of his son.

From Chris Olsen, Kevin Olsen's Dad.."It's Miami or Wisconsin... he's NOT announcing today" #Wisconsin #Canes #TheU

That leaves Jeremy Johnson, Ryan Buchanan and Hayden Rettig as the top pro-style quarterbacks on Auburn's target list.
