Will Rhymes Rises to Joke with Trainers After Fainting on Field

Ian CasselberryJun 7, 2018

As you may have heard or read by now, there was a rather scary moment in last night's game between the Tampa Bay Rays and Boston Red Sox.

Second baseman Will Rhymes was hit by a pitch from Franklin Morales in the eighth inning. Soon after taking first base, Rhymes turned to the Rays dugout and said he had to come out of the game. As first base coach George Hendrick approached him, Rhymes became wobbly and he slowly went to the ground.

He fainted, fell unconscious right there on the field.

Rhymes was taken off the field on a cart and underwent X-rays on his right forearm. Amazingly, there was no fracture, though Morales' 95 mph fastball left a noticeable welt and what appeared to be a dent. The Rays training staff attributed the fainting to an adrenaline rush, as reported by MLB.com's Adam Berry

Despite all that happened, Rhymes still took the opportunity to make light of the situation when trainers asked him questions to determine his state of mind. The Tampa Tribune's Roger Mooney shared the anecdote on Twitter.

Holy inappropriate timing, Batman! The Dark Rhymes rises! But Rhymes' sense of humor obviously showed that he was lucid.

Just to get back at him, however, I suggest the team trainers get Rhymes a Robin outfit and make him run out to second base in trunks and a cape.

Holy payback, Batman! OK, enough of those jokes. We're glad Mr. Rhymes is doing well

UPDATE: Was Rhymes recalling this legendary Snickers ad? Doesn't seem like a coincidence. Hat tip to good citizen Craig Barker for the reminder.
