New York Yankees Have Many Options Available for Their Bench

Bronx Baseball DailyFeb 2, 2009

The Yankees filled a couple of gaping holes this offseason, including their need for a front-of-the-rotation starter and first baseman, but they still have needs on the bench, and there are options out there which make sense.

ty-wiggintonBrett Gardner, Jose Molina, and Nick Swisher are locks to make the team. Cody Ransom is a decent bet too, but they could decide to go with Angel Berroa instead. Beyond that is anybody’s guess.

But there are lots of free agents still available still, and a few of them may be willing to accept a part-time role on the Yankees bench.

If you think the Yankees could need another catcher, Javier Valentin is still available. Ivan Rodriguez, Johnny Estrada, and Sal Fasano are also still available.

If you’re looking for the Yankees to pick up a bat for their bench, Nomar Garciaparra is available, as are Ray Durham, Mark Grudzielanek, and Ty Wigginton.

The Yankees don’t really need any outfielders, but if they get desperate and want another center fielder, Andruw Jones, Jim Edmonds, and Ken Griffey Jr. can still be had.

There are a lot more names available; I just thought these could all be good fits. To check out the extended list, go to MLB Trade Rumors. There are about 90 free agents left and only about 11 days to go until pitchers and catchers report, so there will be a lot of signings and bargains going on these next two weeks.

I would like to see the Yankees cash in on one or two of these.
