Chelsea Transfer News: Blues Need Champions League Win to Land Luka Modric

Chelsea and Bayern Munich will square off in the UEFA Champions League final on Saturday. A Blues victory would give transfers more incentive to play at Stamford Bridge next season. 

A loss would give the Tottenham Spurs a place in the Champions League field next year because of their fourth-place finish in the English Premier League this season.

A Chelsea loss would also give midfielder Luka Modric a reason to remain with the Spurs, as opposed to joining the Blues' side next year.

Chelsea is chasing Eden Hazard feverishly but will not lure him from either Manchester squad. The Blues will need to look for cheaper options like Modric to fill the void in the midfield.

Let's take a look at what Modric does well and Chelsea's chances of landing the 26-year-old Croatian midfielder.

Modric's Talent

Modric is very talented in the midfield. He attacks the field better than his eight points this season would suggest.

Modric's quickness is his biggest asset. He changes direction in the blink of an eye and has phenomenal field vision. 

Despite Modric's agility in the open field, he is small in stature. He can be pushed around by physical defenders and needs space to operate at full capacity. 

He is a former Croatian League champion with Dinamo Zagreb and was named Player of the Year in 2007. 

Modric is very talented and cheaper than Hazard will be. The Blues should give Modric heavy consideration, and probably will given their heavy interest in Modric last summer.

Will Chelsea Land Modric?

Chelsea's chances of landing this talented attacking midfielder hinge completely on their Champions League final result. 

If the Blues defeat Bayern Munich, owner Roman Abramovich will spend more money this summer. Players will also have more incentive to play for the reputable Chelsea club.

The Champions League is the cream of the soccer crop. A championship will make Chelsea the hottest club of the summer.

However, if Chelsea loses to Bayern Munich, things will be a lot more difficult.

Tottenham will be more inclined to add premier players if they are in the Champions League next year. Adding players like Jan Vertonghen would provide incentive for Modric to stay with his current club. 

A Blues victory would be a major victory on the field and a huge momentum-booster heading into the summer transfer season. 

If Chelsea wins do not be surprised if rumors fly quickly regarding possible acquisitions.

Modric will be the subject one of those rumors.
