2012 Preakness Contenders: Long Shots with Best Chance to Steal the Show

Donald WoodMay 17, 2012

With the 2012 Preakness Stakes Saturday, May 19, it's time to break down the long shots that will be contenders in the 137th annual race.

While most eyes will be on I’ll Have Another as he runs after the second leg of the illustrious Triple Crown, those with gambling eyes will be looking for the best way to make the big bucks.

All of the following horses would be well worth a look if you are betting on the race, but we do not condone that behavior.

Good luck, though!

Tiger Walk

While Tiger Walk did not race at the 2012 Kentucky Derby, the steed did run into the Derby’s precursor, the Wood Memorial.

A strong fourth-place finish at the Wood Memorial, two wins and five top-fives in the last five races is as impressive as you could ask for from a horse that didn’t run in the Derby.

If you are searching for a long shot with a good chance of paying off big, Tiger Walk at 20/1 isn’t the worst bet in the race. This may be worth a small wager.

Odds: 20/1

Cozzetti

While Cozzetti didn’t run the derby and only has one win in his last seven races, this is the kind of 20-1 long shot many gamblers dream of.

This horse has spent its career getting better as it moves up in distance and has never finished worse than eight in any race it has entered.

With two third-place finishes on one fourth-place finish in his last three starts, Cozzetti is the kind of horse that could get the perfect post draw and ride it all the way to a win.

Odds: 20/1

Pretension

If I were a betting man, my long shot bet would be on Pretension. At 25/1, there is no doubt that this would pay off huge if he were to steal the show.

While this horse didn’t race in the Kentucky Derby, he did win the last race he entered which coincidentally took place at Pimlico Race Course.

This will be another case of post position dictating the final odds heading into the event, but watch if you see Pretension in an ideal post; he could be worth a wager.

Odds: 25/1
