Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea: Who Must Star for Blues to Win Champions League?

Mike ChiariJun 7, 2018

With Chelsea having to win a play-in game in order to qualify for next year's UEFA Champions League, there is no guarantee that they will get another chance to reign supreme over the soccer world any time soon.

With that in mind, it is absolutely paramount that they capitalize on their opportunity by topping Bayern Munich on Saturday.

Many were shocked by the Blues' run to the Champions League final. However, now they've made it, there is nothing left to do other than to go all out and play to win.

Chelsea disappointed in the EPL this season, but they still have a star-studded squad capable of beating anyone. Therefore, Bayern Munich won't have an easy time despite its status as a slight favorite.

Here are three players who will need to be at their best on Saturday if Chelsea hopes to lift the Champions League trophy for the first time ever.

Didier Drogba

At 34 years of age, Chelsea striker Didier Drogba is not the player he once was. However, thanks to his experience and goal-scoring touch, he can still be a big-time contributor for the Blues.

Drogba netted just five goals in 16 contests during the EPL season, but he has been a major factor in the Champions League and was a big reason why Chelsea was able to upset Barcelona in the semifinals.

In a match as closely contested as this one is sure to be, it may only take one goal to claim the title. There has been plenty of talk that this may be Drogba's final match with Chelsea, as he has slowly been phased out, but there would be no better way to go out than with a Champions League victory. Drogba certainly has at least one more big goal left in him.

Petr Cech

Like Drogba, Chelsea goalkeeper Petr Cech isn't quite at the level that he was earlier in his career. However, many still consider him to be one of the best in the world at his position.

Known for his trademark protective headgear, Cech is a veteran who isn't going to be afraid of the big moments. He has played on all of the world's biggest stages and won't be easily rattled by Bayern Munich despite their considerable talent level.

Asking Cech to come through with a clean sheet may be quite a lofty expectation, but there is a chance that everything could ride on his shoulders.

All it takes is one goal and the entire complexion of the game changes, so Cech certainly won't want to be the one who allows that first tally. Cech is still looking for a Champions League title to add to his already-impressive resume, and there is no doubt that he'll have to be on top of his game for that to happen.

Frank Lampard

At 33 years of age, there is no telling how many more chances Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard will have to win the Champions League. With Chelsea's qualification for next year very much in doubt, this is one he'll have to take advantage of.

The wily veteran has been huge for the Blues this season in EPL play as he leads them with 11 goals and has pitched in five helpers as well. His skill and experience make him a rare breed who Chelsea will be glad to have against Bayern Munich.

There can't be many players out there who want a Champions League title more than Lampard. He has accomplished a ton in his career, but winning Europe's premier club competition would truly be the cherry on top for him.

The Blues will need him to be a leader on the pitch, but he will also have to play at a high level because pretty much everything runs through him. If Lampard doesn't play well, then Chelsea doesn't really stand a chance.
