Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea: Petr Cech Labeling Blues as Underdog Is Genius

Ian HanfordJun 7, 2018

Petr Cech readily agrees with Chelsea's underdog label in Saturday's UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Cech addressed the label to CTK by saying this:

"

"It's a final and you would think that the chances are 50-50, but to play at your own stadium and have your own dressing room is a huge advantage. This coincidence of events has made Bayern the favourites. We will try to outsmart them in some way."

This is a genius move by Cech. Bayern Munich wants to be confident, but embracing the underdog role could put Chelsea in position to capitalize on an overly confident squad.

Cech's coy attitude toward their Champions League final expectations will keep his team humble and focused in Saturday's matchup.

Cech's comments are veteran comments meant to downplay his very talented squad's chances at victory. Regardless of the outcome, this was a smart move by the Blues' netminder.

False Confidence

Bayern Munich should be confident despite their penalty-plagued team. Munich will be without two starting defenseman and midfielder Luiz Gustavo because of yellow cards.

Munich still has Manuel Neuer in net and a solid midfield led by Arjen Robben. Neuer is notorious for solid play in Champions' League play and enjoyed a stellar league season, allowing 21 goals in 33 games.

However, Munich wants to be careful with their level of confidence. Cech and Chelsea's veteran squad will not scare easily in front of Munich's home crowd.

Cech knows his team is without Ramires offensively. This is a huge blow, but Salomon Kalou is a capable replacement. The loss of Ramires should worry the Blues, but Cech allows the media to overplay the loss with his lackluster confidence.

Saying Chelsea must find a way to 'outsmart' them is a classic case of purposely undervaluing his squad. In Chelsea's previous matchups with Munich, goals were scored by Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard.

Both of these players will be ready to feast on any lofty Munich confidence on Saturday.

Underdogs are normally less talented than Chelsea, but these teams are relatively even in all major areas in terms of offensive and defensive personnel.

Grabbing a mental advantage will play a huge role in the outcome of this year's Champions League final. Cech's recognition of this could be one of the game's biggest plays despite taking place off the pitch.
