Madrid Open 2012: Updates on Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Final Scores
Victoria Azarenka may be the top-ranked woman in the WTA, but she never stood a chance against Serena Williams.
The American looked dominant in Madrid, easily handling Azarenka 6-3, 6-1 to take the title. She smashed 26 winners and 14 aces, and she needed just over an hour to win the match.
Perhaps it shouldn't come as a surprise that Azarenka was over-matched in the championship. In eight meetings between the two, Williams holds a 7-1 advantage.
It's the second clay title of the season for Williams, who also won at Charleston in early April.
Meanwhile, Roger Federer is set to vie for the championship on the men's side against Tomas Berdych at 10:30 a.m. ET today.
With a win, Federer would regain the No. 2 ranking in the world.
Federer advanced to the final by easily dispatching Janko Tipsarevic, 6-2, 6-3, while Berdych found more difficulty in his victory over Juan Martin del Potro, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6).
With a win, Federer would earn his third Madrid Open title, having also won the tournament in 2006 and 2009.
UPDATE at 1:30 p.m. ET
Roger Federer has prevailed over Tomas Berdych, surviving a first-set defeat and two tight sets to follow, 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
"Roger Federer is crowned champion of the Mutua Madrid Open, beating Tomas Berdych in an epic final that ends 3-6, 7-5, 7-5.
