Derrick Rose Injury: Bulls Star Reportedly Has Surgery to Repair Torn ACL

With the Chicago Bulls season officially over, star point guard Derrick Rose has reportedly gone under the knife to repair the torn ACL he suffered against the Philadelphia 76ers in Game 1 of their first-round NBA Playoffs matchup.

The Chicago Sun Times is reporting about Rose and his surgery:

Bulls guard Derrick Rose underwent knee surgery to repair his torn anterior cruciate ligament Saturday morning at Rush University Medical Center, the Chicago Sun-Times has learned. Dr. Brian Cole, the Bulls’ team physician, performed the ACL surgery using a graft from Rose’s patellar tendon, a commonly used procedure on young athletes.

There was no question that the star was eventually going to have surgery on his knee, but the team’s early departure from the playoffs only hurried the process. The sooner he has surgery, the sooner he can begin recovering.

What It Means

The No. 1 seeded Chicago Bulls were bounced from the playoffs by the No. 8 Philadelphia 76ers after defending MVP Rose went down late in Game 1 with his torn ACL. That is every team’s worst-case scenario.

As bad as the injury was, many fans through the Bulls still had enough in the tank to make it past the Sixers. Just a few days later, the Bulls organization realizes again just how important Rose is to their team and their chance at winning titles.

What’s Next?

Simple answer; a long and painful road to recovery. Rose will have to go through a recovery process that could force him to miss the start of next season while still trying to get right physically.

Besides the actual act of playing again, Rose has to learn to trust his knee or fear forever losing his explosiveness. The hope from the Bulls is that this injury doesn’t make their star playmaker gun shy to his old moves.

As a fan, I don’t want to see anything less than the Derrick Rose of old.
